It is a regular DSLR flash, not the one on board the camera itself, but the one that goes on the hotshoe. Its the flash you see papparazzi have on their cameras. You just use a cord that connects to the flash and camera and move the flash on top of the tank, face it down so the it flashes in the tank, and tank a picture. This is my assumption, Rallysman can probably confirm this.

Pretty much! The only difference is that I face the flash up and diffuse it back down with a styrofoam box.

It might help diffuse the light, but the dpeth of field would b determined by the focal length and aperture.
