Can any Piranha go in a 55g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
solo p. natterei can work but it would feel more secure with a shoal.
some may experienced with more pygos they tend to be less skittish as compare to smaller number.
can you put single red in a 55g? of course you can, will it behave more comfortable without a shoal? maybe, maybe not. it depends on fish.
if you are set for pygocentrus, a shoal will be better than just one IMO.
with 55g you can start with a few more, maybe 5. first year will grow to around 6" or so, give or take an inch or so. then about an inch or so per year so if you will be keeping them long term you have few years to upgrade.

The max I can probably go for an upgrade would probably be around 75 gallons, would that be okay for a small shoal?

75 for a small shoal would be just fine

How long could a 55 hold 4 Ps?

You should have a good year to worry about getting a new tank

at least a year, maybe two or three, depends on the growth of the fish and how active they are.

I had 3 p. nattereri (red belly piranha) in a 55 for a long time. A little cramped once they get big but if you buy babies then you won't have to upgrade for at least a few years. The 3 I had were pretty big and breeding regularly in their 55. They were at least 6-7 inches when I moved them into a 135 gal with 3 other redbellys. Upgrade to a 75 asap. A 75 gal will house 3-4 red bellies for life. They like to be with friends.
If you want a single fish some species are better off alone.
A small single black piranha would probably be fine for life as they grow slow but eventually he would be happier in a 75 gallon tank. Someone also mentioned a sanchezi or a mac I'll second that.
All piranha need lots of room! Go with the biggest tank you can. Be careful or you will catch piranha fever.....

I have 3 rbp that are 5" in a 29g. from everywhere i read, red bellies like dark dingy water with lots of cover and a current. i have wood stacked in one end to resemble tree roots extending down into the water. over this wood, i placed a power head which bounces the current off the opposite wall, down and back across the bottom. the piranha just lay in the current. if you resembled this in a 55 i cant see why you couldnt keep 6 or 7 5" or so in it.

maybe because they won't stay 5" long? You can pick up dime size and have them pass 5 inches in 8-10 months.......you got a magic switch that stops them from growing any bigger?

If you go overboard with driftwood in a 55 you won't be able to keep 6 or 7 once they hit sub adult size as there's hardly any room in there for established territories
