got a magic switch that stops them from growing any bigger?

it's called stunted growth caused by small tank

Last week in another forum I was lookin' at pics of a Black Pacu raised in 30 gal. now in 55 gal. and that fish is huge! Granted he did have an extended gill plate, a growth usually associated with ammonia/nitrite poisoning, pretty common from what I read about Pacus in captivity. There is so much trama being caused to the gill from the poison that it continually regenerates to combat the poor water condition problem.
Although fish can survive in 1gal of water per 1" of fish this doesn't mean that the volume of that water can successful shed the amount of ammonia being created by the fish. It's like raising a 4' long dog in a 5' cage it's just plain not a healthy way to raise a pet.

Yeah, now imagine the poor health condition and stress with carnivorous fish that can and will eat each other. Recipe for disaster

Well, I learned today that my LFS closed down, so pretty much any chance of a piranha other than RBP is pretty much out.

maybe because they won't stay 5" long? You can pick up dime size and have them pass 5 inches in 8-10 months.......you got a magic switch that stops them from growing any bigger?

If you go overboard with driftwood in a 55 you won't be able to keep 6 or 7 once they hit sub adult size as there's hardly any room in there for established territories

But.... aren't red belly piranha a schooling fish that develop a pecking order in the tank. yes they do require large tanks when an adult size is reached, but as with any other tetra they school together for safety in numbers. there are many predators in the amazon river that use the piranha schools as a key source of food. therefore anything under 10" is happier having lots of cover(especially wood raised above the bottom that they can hide under) and plenty of other fish. when i say i have a power head in the tank it would be the same as having a never ending lap pool like they have on tv. without it the tank would be very small because then having to swim would mean going to one end, turning around, and going to the other. they can swim into that all day, or they can move up under the wood and just hang out. they are not being stunted at all; just being kept in the amount of room they would occupy if i put them in a 55 or a 90.(the 90 i have ready when they pair off....if they do, and i want to put them in a 55 any way, to add a few more to their shoal.) no disrespect, but this is my understanding of how rbp's act and live.

It's not about territory, it's about 5 footlong fish in a 4' tank.

i agree that piranhas are happier in a shoal or school, i agree that piranhas love cover. I observe piranhas as being very skittish and they do alot of darting. When they start feeling cramped and fight over territories, how can they dart away in a tank that's too small? How do they dart from one territory and not end up in another?

yes any piranha can go in a 55 gallon tank but it depends on size, if you are thinking about getting a larger tank later on then sure. red bellies are a good choice, they are group fish and you can have mulitple in the same tank without having to worry about them killing each other.
