Can anyone compare the FX5 to the eheim 2262?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How interesting.

You know what I REALLY want to do? Cut out the tube to which is the intake to the impeller, and insert a larger tube and either weld it in or use some other process. If I were to weld it in, I would have to find a tube of the same plastic type. Not to hard to find out though, the number in the little triangle tells you all that.

Possibly get more flow out of the canister.

All right,

I am the first to admit it, I guess because I am the first to try (per Justin's suggestion).

My 2262 was set up and filled as described HERE. I have no data on original flow rate with clean media, but as it, after 4 month without cleaning, it currently pumps out 338 gph (measured water flow over 30 sec into bucket). I have to add that the owner's manual specifically requests to not use floss, but I did, because I like to polish.

Now I do not want to hear what Hagen says about the FX5, I want actual data from fellow /\/\onsterfishkeepers. Do what I did. Measure your old, clogged, new, FX5 or 2262 flow rate and post. Don't show off, be honest. We're all here to learn.

Bring it on!

Thats great. Eventaully maybe get a flow rate when its clean? Maybe even without floss? Not right away. Im going to guess that the low flow is due to the 4 months of service. Filter floss hold a lot of junk and in 4 month, the floss is probably dark brown or black. I bet the flow clean is up near the Fx5 output.

Thanks a bunch bud!

There has been a few members that have tested their fx5, dirty/clean, I dunno but its been around 600 GPH.

I tested mine at 600 GPH too. I think it may have been around 590+ GPH. Mine is also modified internally but that doesn't seem to have effected the flow. Mine was clean I think. I used a 5 gallon bucket.

I purchased a FX5 about a month a half ago and its Sucks!!!! (for me I guess) today I have to clean the pads again..this is the 2nd time already!! all I have is 2 blue pads in the top basket and the bottom basket and the middle has eheim substate!! and then the Micro bubble begin and the weak flow!! I clean the pads and presto whirlpool! then clooged!~..oh well I must have bad luck.. but I bought a Eheim 2260 last week and filled it to the gills with media (I mean Stuffed) and its Rockin!!! (I guess im in the minority regarding FX5..) i'll be selling this overgrown garbage can soon!! lol lol

Get rid of the micron pad. They shouldn't be used in the Fx5 since it will be a PITA. The surface area is to small for the amount of flow to be using a micron pad.

Cool idea HarleyK....
On my setup with 1" high pressure washing machine hoses and 1" PVC intake to a 1" plastic strainer i got the following...

5.15g water jug
21.64 seconds to fill to 5g line.
I will factor in 1 second for start and 1 second to end for error on the high side but i am pretty quick..
I will also round the seconds to the highest..
22 seconds + 2 seconds for on/off..
24 seconds total to fill 5gallons
puts me @ 750gph.

What i did, got the water jug, a piece of hose, the extra FX5 connector.
shut the valves off installed the valve with the hose to the FX5 and put the hose in the water jug. I opened the intake, turned on the stop watch then turned the FX5 on. so stop watch was running while the hose was filling via gravity. I stopped the stopwatch once the water reached the 5g fill line neck of the water jug then shut the pump off and then turned the valve off on the intake side. Thats it..
my strainer looks like this...

I will also note that this filter was cleaned Saturday and the test was performed a little while ago... I will perform this same test in 4 weeks for the next 3 months.
This filter is stock (non modified) bottom basket is loaded with Substrat-Pro and a polishing pad on top, the bottom of this basket has a blue pad that i had ripped in half to prevent the substrat pro from falling thru. the middle basket is done the same way except there is no polishing pad on top and there is only 1 liter of substrat pro and the rest is filled with fluval bio max. the top basket only has the blue pad.

Did you have the bucket on the floor? Basically, did the filter pull water in from the tank down to the filter and then down to the bucket? Reason I ask is because that seems a bit high for a Fx5 Flow Rate.

You should fill or empty a 5 gallon bucket that is at around the same height as the tank. This will give you a better idea on actual flow.
