Can anyone id this snake I found in my yard?

Found outside. I live in cape may county, New Jersey. Snake is approx 8" long and 1/4" in diameter. Don't want to get a closer look till I know it's not dangerous.

Look at the eyes if it has a vertical line then it's a viper and likely dangerous if the eyes are circles then it's not. Personally looks like a rat snake.

It is not a viper, that is certain. Most likely a grey rat snake, harmless.

+1. Looks like a corn snake? Definitely not venomous. Not sure that there are ANY venomous snakes in NJ. And NO it should NOT be a dead one.
