wow! i thought it was just a pale spotted/florida. that just goes to show you that you can't id these fish based on color and pattern.

i can def. see shortnose in the older photo, but not so much in the more recent photo. very nice fish.

Key trait is the thick Caudal peduncle..Normally this is shallower in Oculatus/playrhinchus.

i think i see what youre talking about, but am a bit unsure. ive been flipping back and forth between some pics of my florida/spotted and the shortnose pictured above trying to pinpoint the differences. could you maybe more specific? i'm not trying to sound like a smart ass...i just think shortnose gar are the toughest for me to id and want to get more of an understanding of them.

thanks

If this is a short nose. Then i wonder what the Lfs had is what.... those were shortnose gars according to him... And there was a differance big differance.. The short nose gars acc to him were really short nose compared to mine... The one i have was labled as a spotted alligator gar... Its def not a Gator gar for sure....

Can anyone tell me what size tank would be suitable for him, in inches ??? He is currently in 36x18x18.. As of now i think its fine.. a lot of swimming space for him.. I will be getting a much bigger tank by june for him..

if it is in fact a short nose i would think a 72" x 24" tank would last a long time if not for life.

One trait very common to Shortnosed is the depth of the tail when compared to Oculatus / platyrhincus of equal size.

These pics might explain this better...(Note however these are not equal sized fish..I need to update my shortnosed pics... but if you look closely you will see what I getting at)

A lot of these traits become easier to see and recognize with the more individual fish you encounter and see.

That is a Shortnosed Lepisosteus platostomus
Spots in the manner shown are not uncommon for these fish.

how'd you know? looks like a spotted/florida to me..:D

ok i just saw the updated pic and would have to go with Florida/spotted IMO. at only about 3 months after the previous photo and at 11" a shorty would still have a longer narrower snout than what we are seeing here. the pattern (as both richard and jordan alluded to) is a bit unusual in that the gar is a bit flushed of coloration, but i'm sure a dorsal view would reveal something closer to Florida/spotted. (richard, i'm sure we'll discuss this amongst many other things at our upcoming meeting :)).

either way, that's my take on it--

Yeah we will have to have a chat about this one.. I would normally quickly think this is a Florida / spotted if it was not for the fish in the other room here and the looks of some of those smaller fish Teleost and I found in that stink hole in Illinois. A dorsal pic giving snout width would definitely help with this..

BTW look at the transverse scale count and lateral counts...
