Hi ive had many bass before but when i got offered this one over a year ago at 24" i knew it was something special.
I was wondering if anyone can identify the sex from the photos below. Or maybe tell me how to tell male or female

I was thinking it was a female by the shape of the head . but i could be wrong.

Going off of the headshape is the worst way to tell sex. Next way would be the shape of the anal fin. The most accurate way of telling would be to vent the cichla...

Male - O >
Female - O o

If you are impatient, and absolutely must know, you can molest your animal. Most cichlids are laid out the same way -- the first hole (relative to the head) is the anus, the second will be shaped differently if it's male or female. Females will have a pore that is round, and males will have a flap that is triangle shaped.

Here's a result from google search of other new world cichlid vents:

Yep!

Ya venting is the easiest and only 100% sure way to know. When they are that large its easy to say

Going based off the anal fin. In "most" cases, the male will have a pointy anal fin, while female will have a rounded anal fin.

In this pic, the male mono (left), female orino (right). Notice how the left cichlas anal fin is pointed, and the right cichla anal fin is rounded.

Im away at the moment so cant get any more photos for a while. And i understand what you are saying about the vents. i will get my partner who is looking after my fish to take a look. The reason why i would like to know is because there is a 18" female mono for sale and i think he/she would like a partner. From past experience with bass they always look more relaxed / comfortable in groups.I would rather have a Male and female pair though.Am i correct in saying the female bass usually grow larger than males ?

Yep. Anal fin doesn't always work, but it is your best option if you are unwilling to pull the fish out (and with one over 2 feet long, I'd be pretty unwilling to!). My mono hybrid in my avatar is female, though you'd swear up and down that she was male based on the picture alone, I seriously did not know until she laid eggs.
