Can anyone tell me the sex of my 26" Temensis Peacock bass

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Going based off the anal fin. In "most" cases, the male will have a pointy anal fin, while female will have a rounded anal fin.

In this pic, the male mono (left), female orino (right). Notice how the left cichlas anal fin is pointed, and the right cichla anal fin is rounded.

I've seen those bass before.

Yep. Anal fin doesn't always work, but it is your best option if you are unwilling to pull the fish out (and with one over 2 feet long, I'd be pretty unwilling to!). My mono hybrid in my avatar is female, though you'd swear up and down that she was male based on the picture alone, I seriously did not know until she laid eggs.
I had two monos that breed twice but nothing came of it . I will try dig the pictures out of them. They were 16 and 17" when i sold them last year. nice fish but greedy buggers as you will know too well. If you have them in a mixed tank its nearly impossible to get food to the bottom fish. Thats why ive got just the one!! lol
And as far as getting it out of the tank is concerned, it takes some doing, 26" of pure power. you know why they are renowned for being the best sports fish in the world when you grab hold of it put it that way.

Thanks mate
Just been looking at your thread and my main reason for wanting to know the sex is so i can try Breed my Term. The only problem is i don't think i have a chance finding another term or any other bass for that matter at a similar size or even within 5" of the size of mine. lol
You are determined to breed your fish aren't you. Great looking fish by the way. I wish mine had the speckled look .Obviously you have researched into great depth in breading these and i wish you the best of luck.
My mono's were similar size to yours when they breed. At the time they were in a 5x2x2ft tank with a alligator gar, 2 red tail catfish and a giant snakeheads all over 20"
so that just shows that if they are ready then they will do it anywhere. This was over 2 years ago and my 2nd tank by the way if you was wondering who the hell would put all them monster fish together in such a small tank. I had only been keeping fish for 4 months and the fish came up cheep and i thought "got to have them" lol
I had no where else to put the monos when they breed. But after looking into breeding myself i came across a chinese guy on youtube who had breed his bass 7 times and nothing materialized . He was getting very frustrated and thought it must be something he was doing wrong. He got some advice from a farm which have been successfully breeding bass for many years and they told him even though his bass were old enough to breed they wasn't at a size that was considered fully mature adults and for that reason he was told why the fry never survived for over a week.I think a size of over 21" was mentioned and was considered the size where you could successfully breed bass .
There might be exceptions or the breeder might have come up with that info from his own findings who knows. I will try and find the link and post it to you.

Are them Monos the ones you bought from me? Noticed you had the Dorado I sold you up for sale he's massive now, still has the defect in his dorsal fin though :(

Them pictures were from ages ago mate.I couldnt remember who i got the bass off, but yes it was you. The dorado i don't no whether it was yours or not as i had 3 of a similar size but two died when my cellar flooded and i had to set up temporary containers for them with polythene sheet over the top. they somehow managed to jump out one night along with a azul bass - £300+ down in one night !!.He is in perfect nick now though.he has to go in a diffrent tank because he harrases my 2 armatus in the big tank and then every now and then the big aimara wolf would have a bite at him!!
Have you seen my new list of fish i can get hold of ?
Japanese perch maybe ?
Barramundi
Golden masheer
Cuban garfish
Large mouth bass
Murray cod
siamese carp.
There are a few brackish to full saltwater preds on there too as i notice you have a reef set-up. The big eye trevally are awesome- just like little pit bulls when they eat,
you wont find anyone in u.k selling these fish.
There is a full price list on my facebook page

There are also some videos of these fish in action

Temensis? Doesn't look like one. More like a hybrid something. Temensis would be more elongated

Dont get what you mean by it should be more elongated ?
Fish are like humans they come in all shapes, sizes, breeds and colors
.
If you type the word Temensis into Google and click on images and you will see just how many different shapes, sizes and colour variations of the Tameness bass they really are.How many bass at 26" do you see in the aquarium hobby?. Ive had the fish nearly two years and it has grown about an inch in length, It has thickened out loads and put a lot of depth though. And the colors and markings look more vivid.

The picture above shows an example of two wild temensis. The top one looks like mine and the bottom one which is the better looking bass IMO - the speckled temensis which are what Bassinmike85 has and is trying to breed at the moment .I would rather have size than beauty in this instance though lol .I dont no how old his bass are but i would estimate them at maybe 2- 2.5 Years old.
If you take in to account bass can grow 12" in the first year then to 18 inch in two years they are going to have a elongated shape aren't they. where as my bass ive had it two years and its grown just over an inch. I don't Know the age of mine either but if i had to guess id say 4-5 years. peacock bass especially Temensis grow in length the first few years and then when they start to mature they fill out and get the depth in there body. The colors of these bass vary immensely due to which rivers they come from and the Same applies to all bass.
The temensis pictures bellow clearly show this.

I paid double the price for some Kelberi 'Araguaia' which originate from the Araguaia river rather than Kelberi 'Bahia'. Both beautiful fish but he first is regarded as the best as you can see why. These stunning bass demand over $700 USD at 14" in Asia !
