Your gonna need a big pond, especially because masheers get big and so do koi
Being 15 I can 2nd this my biggest tank is 75 gallons and even that my 29, 50, and 10 are A LOT not to mention a bigger tankMahseer will probably end up eating bichirs, most polypterus available are either small farm-bred ones or more expensive larger specimens of larger species.
Everyone always talks about the upgrade but life has a funny way of interrupting that process. If this is also one of your earlier tanks don't jump the gun. You will find that school tends to screw around with your ability to maintain larger tanks. If the pond and/or larger tanks are still just plans or ideas then I suggest you stick with 55-friendly fish. I have has a 75 since I was 14 and have been proper happy with it; not expensive to maintain and still many good options for it. You don't need to jump right into the big stuff. Good luck.

I just find small fish boring ?Mahseer will probably end up eating bichirs, most polypterus available are either small farm-bred ones or more expensive larger specimens of larger species.

My kuhli loaches and small catfish are much more interesting to watch than my big synodontis. Don't walk before you run. In fact, it's easier to get small fish to exhibit natural behaviour in a medium tank.I just find small fish boring ?
You lose a lot of money this way, start with a 55 then try and snag up deals from then on. Of the 10 fish tanks I have either running or in storage, only half were purchased new. The rest I got dirt cheap or for free. Most probably ima just buy 55 use it sell it upgrade and so forth
I wouldn't quite say that keeping a "fair fish" alive for 8 years isn't experience. That's honestly pretty good if your a kid and able to take care of a fish for that long with little to no problems. Most "fair fish" generally don't make it more then a couple months let alone for 8 years, atleast in the hands of your average kid. Granted I will agree that experience does come with time but you can't gain that experience by just research alone, in order to gain that experience you have to eventually take the plunge and dive in head first. Tho I will also agree that research should always be first and foremost before diving straight in. Bottom line is is that (research)+practice=experienceBut, it’s something you have to work for, you have to work your way up. Experience is better than knowledge sometimes. Like you’ve said in a recent thread you had a goldfish for 8 years. That’s. Not. Experience I’d say that’s like saying well I’ve had goldfish from the fair since I was 5 years old. It’s very different you have to learn young padawon people who have been in the hobby for 20 years wouldn’t walk into a pond and stuff they didn’t know about because they’ve had fish tanks. No they’d study and study and study I got my first fish tank after 2 years of studying and I can’t say how long you’ve been studying and learning stuff.
