i've never x-rayed a fish before, i also did not take into consideration the thick bony scales. i read x-rays all day so if i could see the bones i could probably find the fx. I know you much more experience with gar then i do, so i would take your advice over mine. I Still think it would be a cool x-ray to do anyway.
I tried this with a tropical exhibiting the exact same symptoms.. I'm not an X-ray tech but we used the same setting used commonly for Turtles hoping to get through the scales with some detail. The X-ray turned out far from satisfactory. The area suspected as the actual Fracture did however show as an indistinct blob. The best conclusion was this was an area of calcified muscle tissue that began to form around the injury. I still have the fish and it is doing fine.. This was an interesting an cool experiment to try.

I'm not saying do not give it a shot if you wish or if Micheal wishes.. Why not after all? could be interesting to see other attempts at this...

Just a warning on previous results and the difficulty involved not really a do not bother trying statement.. Do try and do test if you can...

Poly, do you have a picture of what the xray looked like?

the gar does have a nasty bend at a point in its back which you can see. It does not have full function of its lower half right now but can move all the fins and flick its tail to an extent. it definitely isnt looking good when he tries to swim...ill get a video of swimming tomorrow

Pretty sure its broken but I gotta keep up hope. Alotta sentimental value with this fish. Keep your fingers crossed for him guys... Like I said video tomorrow...... *sigh* most heartbreaking thing so far since I have been keeping fish the last 5 years

How about CT? I would say MR but I'm sure it would take too long. Not sure if you could see more, but it would be awesome to observe.

i watched my needle nose get bit on it's bottom jaw
and the next morning it was swimming around upside down
in a position of what looked to be V, it died hours after that.

the next day the same thing happened to the other gar.
i regret putting them in a cichlid setting.

:(

I hope I have the luck you do. Is there a such thing as surgery on a fish to correct it?

unfortunately no surgery we know of that would be productive (or worth the cost since it would be relatively ineffective) at this time. sorry to hear about your fish, but the damage does look like it is pretty severe given the images. if it only continues to deteriorate, the humane thing to do for the fish would be to euthanize it. again, sorry about your gar--

He still ate the next day after it happened. Im going to give it quite some time before I even consider the thought of letting it go. I am just praying its a sprain or bruise etc
