For your tank size i would check out retics, hystrix or scobina.

+1 , Can't agree more with you Venom,

Myth- Rays need to be fed 5 times per day, BUSTED- Rays do not need to be fed 5 times per day, (Could not imagine that food bill well ok, my ray food 2.00-4.00 a day x 5 = $10.00- $20.00 per day or about $7,000 per year) heck they dont even need to be fed 2 times a day and they can still be very fat and happy eating once each day. And then on top of that some people skip a day of feeding mature rays during a week. And they will still be very solid, fat and happy.

Myth- They def. need special attention on a daily basis, BUSTED- Rays need good water, oxygen, tank space, food. PLAUSIBLE- I have to cut shrimp or worms up daily if feeding such food, but I do that for my fish also when feeding such food items.

Myth- Rays need water Changes everyday, BUSTED- Rays like many other fish are resilient and can take the normal water parameter changes that occure in aquariums, as long as your water testing is done and everything is in check like with any other fish you will be doing great. Constant water changes or drip systems are used on allot of aquariums because lets be honest who wants to do a water change on a 300-600 gallon tank. To do a really good water change on my tank (600 gallons) it would take hours of time, about 3 hours no joke, a drip system has given me my lazy life back, and now I can focus back on the other tanks, I almost do nothing on my ray tank other than change my filter socks, Filtration is key though, if you do not plan ahead and have a good filtration setup for your ray tank it can make things much harder.

Myth- You should start with a regular Motoro ray, PLAUSIBLE- They are a great ray and easy to keep but females and some males grow very large. Most males stay on the smaller size but always some grow very large. Allot of marble Motoro rays have been known to stay very small along with hystrix rays. Other options are availiable to ray keepers. My self with a tank your size I would look into getting a marble motoro male or two.

Lots of people house rays in a 6x2 footprint. They are extremely dirty and need to be fed up to 5 times a day to keep them looking solid. I've had at least a dozen over the years and learned a lot about them. I personally do not have the time to care for them with 29 tanks running in my house. They def. need special attention on a daily basis and possibly a water change everyday if your filtration is not up to par. You should start with a regular Motoro ray. Don't think your better off with a hysterix or tea cup just because there smaller. They are very hard to keep for a beginner and your better off with motoros. My first ray was a 13" Motoro. I,d get an established ray rather than a pup to ensure they eat and are a bit hardy for your first experience. 2 rays can live in your footprint for a long time. I'm sure you've seen up to 6 in the same size tank but I'd stick to 2 or 1. When I kept more than one together they were always chewed on and knicked up. Best of luck hope my advice helps, rays are amazing to watch and will do well with a little extra care

The only problem of i get a motro is that ill more then likely have to sell it and o live in kansas so not a big market for monster fosh round here

Retics or "tea cups" are nowhere near as hard as people think they are either. I own 3.. Ive never owned any other rays.. but i've never had any issues with these guys as far as being delicate or sensitive. If you can maintain a fishtank, and understand that they need abit of TLC ( usually live blackworms and as they get bigger nightcrawlers and other foods) They are not challengeing. the key ime is to get healthy looking fish to begin with. I saw about a dozen retics during my search for the right ones. the first few weeks I just kept blackworms in the tank 24/7 to fatten the rays up and now feed 1/4 lb once a week. and chopped up crawlers to stretch out the blackworms. in your footprint if you plan on keeping ther fish beside rays I would go with 1 male. females might outgrow a 6x2. the long tails on these guys is why imo they need almost the same footprints as some of the larger rays. I'll have had mine 1yr in Feb or March. Hystrix also fall in this size catagory.

imo is a horrible idea to get a larger ray that is "heartyier" because in the end its going to die from it's own waste build-up/inadequete tank size.

I have a female retic that is 13inches without her tail and I have a male hystrix that is 14 not including tail. I would never in a million years put that size rays in a 6x2 tank. No retics aren't as hard as people make them out to be. I have had mine now going on 8 years. People just have a tendency to neglect these poor rays and they perish in small tanks. My male retics are 8 and 9.5 inches fully mature so if you must do rays do male retics or possibly male marble motoro but only 1 ray no more. Do you want a tank with nothing else in it besides 1 male sting ray? And with that ray you are still looking at a 50% water change once a week minimum.

No i have an arpwana, clown knife, sun catfish, 2 common plecs and a royal. Thats what i was sayin the royal os pretty grumpy when ppl get in his space so idk of its a good idea... Lol

correct me if im wrong but i believe plecos no good with rays because they suck the slim off them? causing stress? which can lead to death? then agaiin its just something that i heard and makes sense.

Thats what i thoifht would happen but i wasnt sure seeing as how iv never had a ray lol.... But thanks for the info guys maybe down the road i will have a seperate setup... Thanks again

Pretty harsh hah... just my own experience. I may have stretched the truth a bit but not really. Drip systems are a water change every day if im not mistaken? My pups always did better with multiple small meals a day not to mention grow quick. And your average joe with a 180 featuring h.o.b.'s, maybe a sump if hes lucky is going to be spending alot more time cleaning that tank than watching it. If your willing to set up an auto changer system for your rays your proving the point they need special care compared to your run of the mill fish. I dont think i said anything thats not true

Venom is right, do not trust that post 6x2 is just too small for long term ownership even with 50% weekly water changes and massive sump filtration.
