I read ages ago that a neon tetra weighs between 0.5 to 0.8 gramm, don't know how true this is.
Today read about a 13 inch midas weighing in at 2.8lbs = 1270g
So if both weights are right 1270g divided by 0.8g comes to 1587.5 or 1 inch of adult midas = 115 neon tetra.

I would say no more than 1587, post a photo

Well 1500 neon in 180G (6x2x2) look not crowded as it sound by a huge number :)
I never own that much neon before but as 1 time I got around 600 neon in 180G and for sure the tank still look empty :) I was thinking to get like 2000 neon to fill up the tank but the ideal was put aside due to moving to new house and new job.

Hello; the idea is that instead of one large fish you will have an equal mass of very small fish. Off the top of my head I am not really sure but suspect the bio-load of many small fish may be greater than that of one large fish of equal mass. I know there are efficiencies of size in warm blooded animals but cannot seem to recall how this works with cold blooded animals.
I do not guess it matters in one sense. You could still have a very large number of neons in a tank that big.
Back in the 1970's I raised several hundred zebra danios from eggs. I put them in a 125 gallon. It was a sight to see. I have considered doing something like that again.

I had 200 swordtails in a 125 with a large cactus pleco and they had all kinds of room and every color they came in.

I know this sounds morbid, but getting all the dead ones out will be a pain...I mean, don't neons live like, a year? The death rate/replacement would be a job all it's own.
But it would look awesome.

I guess a snail colony would take care of that, out of interest; does anyone know the general lifespan for a neon?

Also i just noticed 1587.5 neons lol, you gonna stock a half neon? :P

Hello; I have some neons more than a year in a tank for me. I think some are two plus years as i am pretty sure it has been that long since ipurchased them. They were already a decent size when I purchased them.
