can i put 1587.5 neon tetra in a 180 gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello; I have some neons more than a year in a tank for me. I think some are two plus years as i am pretty sure it has been that long since ipurchased them. They were already a decent size when I purchased them.
Hell, I remember having a long-lived bugger that made it like five years or something like that. He was like all gray for the last year of his life.

Does anyone know the general lifespan for a neon?
Life span depend on water quality and tank size, if you're not overstock them and keep water at top quality then they easy last up to 3 years in a tank setup just only for them, they are easy got bully by other fishes and die.

yeah, sounds pretty crazy. Even wholesale you'll be throwing down the better part of a few grand... normal attrition would have you watching a couple hundred dollars disappear a month.

Why not just buy around a dozen and try to breed them?

or torchlight tetras.. are just like neons but with bright coppery band instead of blue. But for whatever reason seem 1000x tougher than neons in my experience. I bought 2 batches of 40 neons.. they would only last about a half year at most.. about 90% gone after a couple months.... I have the same torchlight tetra's for at least a couple years. So unless something in my tank has a thing about eating blue fish, the torchlights are way more hardy.

The second time I tried another batch of 40 neons I had signifcantly improved the water quality in my tank... added 2 35watt UV filters that dumped together into a filter with 2 gallons of Purigen... my water was pristine.. but I had same experience.. they would start dying off immediately and would be completely gone after a few months.

Neon's were the only fish that I ever saw do that.

Sorry to go off topic, but are torchlight tetras the same thing as glowlight tetras? Google didn't help me much. :)

Sorry I was a bit drunk when i first posted this and it didn't come across how i wanted it to, I am not seriously going to put that many neons in a tank. A few days before i put this up i was at my lfs getting fish food and heard one of the staff going on about 1 cm per ltr/ 1 inch per gallon I thought nobody used this any more so i thought i would do some drunken maths as i put in the first post 115 neons to 1 inch of midas.

Hello; very well, but I do like the idea. If you ever reconsider the notion I will give moral support. Also if the neons are too expensive to consider, then the zebra danioes are a good alternative.

I have raised zebras in fairly large numbers with a fairly simple setup. They are also among the easiest to induce to spawn. They are also quite hardy. I kept a smaller tank than yours with 40+ neons recently. While they are colorful and striking, they do not move in schools the way the zebras will. My neons are most often moving about in a random way and not so often in any sort schooling. Back when I had a large number of the zebras in a 125 they were nearly always in motion and quite often in a large school.

While most ideas when a bit drunk are bad ones, this one is appealing if not practical. A good thread at any rate.
