Can I put gouramis with my polypterus ?

Just ignore Darius. Everyone else does.

Not quite true. I would wish more responsibility for the animals kept here. He said the gouramis shredded the bichirs external gills...yes, thats pretty bad and common sense tells me that the bichir is hurt from OPEN WOUNDS. Thats why i thought this topic is a joke.

He didn't even know what gourami it was! Those small ones? The kind that won't be eaten? Come on man! Any gourami other than a giant will be eaten! and giants are most certainly NOT small! I just can't believe the gourami did that though. Never had a gourami kill another living creature or nip at all.

I don't keep honeys just blues pearls and dwarfs.

Kept a Delhezi with external gills with gouramis and had no problems. 3 full size blue gouramis and 3 gold gouramis. Your everyday common gouramis will be just fine with a polypterus even babys with gills. Never had a single gourami worried about anything on the bottom. I sure there are some more rare exotic species of gouramis that are more agressive.

Actually, my old blue gourami that I kept for about 7 years was probably the most aggressive gourami I have had. It was in a tank with fish between 2 and 4 times its size (two large oscars, a pacu, and a common pleco), and it constantly harassed them. And as far as I know, there really aren't too many "rare" species out there in the hobby, with the exceptions of certain members of the Osphronemus genus.
