??? Can I put my Ornate in my Planted 120 ???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just about anything that itsn't bite sized or super aggressive is compatible with polys. If the angels are big enough I'd give it a go, and keep the ornate well fed. Your pic of the tank doesn't work, but the only thing I'd be worried about with an ornate in a planted tank would be the lack of swimming space.

I've got my 16"+ ornate with geophagus and heckeliis.

Okay thanks... Does anyone know if angelfish are compatible with ornates?
Just make sure your angels are big enough. Try keeping the ornate on pellets, that way he will be looking for pellets rather than fresh fish. It seems to work for me, but I am normally very careful what I put in that could be viewed as a midnight snack.

Sorry I didnt notice the pic didnt show up, I've attached it now. Any new comments since now you can see how heavily planted it is?

When it's that heavily planted, especially with stem plants, it wont work long term. As the ornate gets heftier, it will start breaking the stems from resting on the plants, or darting through them.

I'm trying to establish some swords in my tank right now and the bichirs are giving the plants hell, especially when they like to swim in on spot against the glass that is right next to the swords :irked:

I've been re-planting at least one plant every couple days. I have to plant two swords right now as I type this.

beautiful tank btw :)

Thanks, I really cannot make up my mind. My bichir is my favorite fish but I also want a heavily planted tank that will not be destroyed. Maybe I just have to pick one or the other.....anyone else have any advice???

I was going through the same dilemma you are, until I found inspiration from Uwe, a german member here.

He is growing a bunch of amazon swords in his polypterus tanks.

I brushed up on sword plant care, and all they need is root tab fertilizer once a month, low-moderate lighting, and you're set, perfect combo for polypterus.

I've got like 7 species of sword in my tank now and they're just starting to get established.

The bigger the sword the better, to help it get established and not uprooted by your bichirs.
