CAN I USE MEDS TO TREAT GARS?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
gator gar

yea i know thanks :) , and as far as gar like you said i bumped temp and added salt and its eye is clear already amazing ! lol ...

and for others unfortunately i am slightly over stocked and havent upgraded filtration system but i am getn rid of some fish soon, giving to a friend.
i have a 55 gallon with 2 penguin 350s and i have had it running for 1yr and a half some fish i had previously in smaller tank before upgrade they were tiny when purchased and no problems until just recently i was not expecting to add gar but it was a gift for birthday from a friend , and i was not about to turn away the gar lol its gorgeous. i was already overstocked to begin with and was looking for takers on some of my fish. and just 2 weeks ago i noticed my nitrate 40ppm and ive never seen it go to 40ppm ever and i know thats the hightest it can go but never had it like that. ammonia 0 which slight went up to .25ppm but i got it back down with more water changes. and ph slightly went down to 6.8 guess due to high bioload? i never cleaned tubes until i read about having to much bioload increases acid in water which causes ph to drop,so i didnt know where all this crap was comming from till i took apart everything and noticed how gunky tubes were. and when i cleaned i noticed water circulation also increase, now am on top of it and i am perfect with ph.i usually have great water quality here where i live. i have small fish regardless but still to much for tank size i believe.. gold sev(3in) jack demp(4in) tire eel(6in) clown knife(5in) flowerhorn(2.5in) salvini cic(2in). and 4 clown loaches(2.5-3in) these are the ones i noticed with ick, which is why i asked. i moved loaches to my small 10 gallon i have running thats empty. had small community fish recently but gave all to a friend. so i am currently treating loaches for ick there and my big tank already seems slightly better?.. maybe its just me may be to soon to tell or am just excited that gar is looking great in his eye again. cant believe water temp and salt is working . thank you all for you input very helpful and am glad i joined mfk

i answer this question for u in the other thread man. no meds for gar. just bump ur temp and add salt. get rid of ur loaches with him as well.
(i didnt want to hijack that other thread thats why i had u start a new one)

For a 55, I would suggest a Marineland C-360. The Marineland canisters are easy to use, easy to understand, rarely clog, and are nice and quiet. They also come with great warranties with lovely customer service folks. And they come loaded with media, right out of the box!

whoa man. did u say that gator is in a 55g? if so upgrade now. he will be 2ft before u know it. no joke. by the end of the growing season he will be waaaaaayyyy to big for ur 55g just to let u know man. add the fluval for now but u need to upgrade soon. very soon.
gar is an addiction and we r glad to have u here. do not get offended by any thing we say! that needs to be established now. we might be very upfront about how we feel but plz dont get offeneded(god i cant spell). also ur ph at 6.8 is nothing to worry about. i keep all my gar at 6.6.
also alot of ur fish are going to need bigger tank. but ur gar is gonna need a bigger one first. gl man. im sure i missed some of ur questions and some other things i should address but im tired. lol

no man i appreciate all your help. you have been very helpful ;) thanks, and also thanks to all others. i am still learning so being upfront is what i need so i learn.. and yes i know im looking at a 120 or 180 if i keep more of my fish. i really just wanna keep clown knife flowerhorn and gar in the long run they are my newest :) gar is about 6inches now i would say but hes very thick compared to other gars ive seen at lfs, and his mouth is short but wide and teeth are amazingly big and scary but hes gorgeous! hes white and with slightly grey top and black spots, never seen one this nice and hes use to eating krill which is all i feed my fish besides peas and bloodworms occasionally cause eel loves them. and my cichlids love peas for some reason. friend told me to try and its a success. lol

You're looking at more than a 180. These gars can grow to four feet or so, if I'm not mistaken.

you positive ? i was told 18inch max in cativity from the place it was purchased which is a fish only n distributor place here in long island i believe its called suffolk county fish & reef, i know its tough listening to pet stores since most seem more interested in the sale but this guy that helped out my friend did not push once showed him how hes had him since maybe 3 inches and only shown to eat krill so thats why hes used to it, hes a firm believer in no feeder fish, not healthy he says and i believe i learned my lesson from feeding feeders to an oscar and got h.i.t.h almost instantly. and anyways if it does get to 4 ft i obviously will not have him anymore lol. i think 180 width and length wise would be just fine for atleast 12-15in . but then again some of you know better so.... ? oh and my friend just told me he said he thinks he remember guy saying it was a spatula spotted gar? does that sound right? cause ive looked up gator gar which idk if that is the correct name and i get longnose monsters, no resembelance to mine at all? so idk need more pics of my gar?

I agree with the ID as an Alligator gar, but I am not familiar with the "Spatula Spotted Gar," so maybe someone else will chime in with a postive ID.

Gator Gars get huge! Most of the other gars which are commonly available do top out at two feet or so, but these guys are the exception. I've personally seen a group of them at Steinhart in San Francisco that were at least three feet.
