can my oscar live in a 60 gallon tank for life

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For life, I would say "no". Minimum for one and nothing else would be a 75gal and even that is pushing it.

perhaps but extremely few tankmates. at ur own risk cuz the oscar might attack them.

Depends, what are the tank dimensions. You want your fish to be able to turn around in the tank without having to bend their body. If the narrowest part of the tank is under 16 inches, i give him a years, maybe 2, and the O will outgrow it, and that is with very little decoration and maybe no tankmates.
These are dirty fish and sloppy eaters, and without the proper filtration and water changes they can foul the water quickly which when coupled with the stress of a small or overcrowded tank, and lead to disease.
The funny thing is that all of those water changes that you do to keep the water clean can also accelerate the O's growth. Hope this helps.

Im going to say yes, but please understand that is the minimum for an adult oscar by its self. Speaking from experience minimum tank size means maximum maintenance. I had a adult oscar (12+ inches) in a standard 55 gallon with 2 emperor 400 hob filters. I was doing water changes ever 14 days +/- to keep nitrates down and the O would do backflips in its tank even though it just barely had enough room to turn around..

Things are much better now that I have a 125g!

Oh the great "big fish, small tank" debate.
For the sake of argument, an oscar could live in a 1 gallon beta tank for life, but it will be a really short life.

I had an L-600 pleco in a 65 36x18x26 and even though he was with some smaller barbs the fish was cramped after awhile. I was doing 50% water changes once a week and ran 2 aquaclear 110's on the tank (and that is some powerful filtration), but it still seemed that pleco desearved a bigger tank. I gave him to another member on here that has him in a 125. I would not do an oscar in anything less than a 100 gallon tank but that is just me. Even though they get around 12 inches they get really thick.
