Can not kill the Ick

I have personally seen the effects of to much salt to quick on biological bacteria. When I switched my puffers tank from fresh to brackish (1.010SG) in about a week and a half. The tank crashed and ammonia levels went through the roof. But remember this was using way more salt than anyone would ever have to use as a medication. But it can happen.

Would not, or should not, be the same salt as used for freshwater applications.

o **** i did not no we cant use rid ich with scaleless fish, so i shouldnt be using it with my clown loaches? and there one ones that have ich. Also i took all my carbon out.

Yeah for some reason it messed with my hardness/PH levels... no clue why. I did dissolve it first... I would put it in the new water I was either topping off or adding new water to my tank with. My heat in the tank is generally around 79 degrees... it will sometimes fluctuate to about 81. I got all these fish from the local fish store. They take really good care of their fish. I am in there once or twice a week and none of the tanks I took my fish out of had an ich outbreak. They said it has something to do with the temp or some sort of loud noise (banging on the glass) scaring them and stressing them out. The water temp is usually a solid 79 and there is no loud commotion going on in my house. So I have no clue what brought this on. Today is day 11 so hopefully it will be pretty well taken care of by day 14. Thanks for your help guys and anymore is appreciated.

What salt did you use? I am suspecting this is marine salt which is the wrong type of salt if it messed up your hardness levels. Marine salt has buffering properties, not the table salt nor the "aquarium" salt.

im going through the same thing right now, so would you recomend to just keep using the dosage and not change the water or do the 20% water changes like the bottle recomends?

I'd rather use salt than meds. Meds are last resorts if all else fail. Dissolve table salt thoroughly and add slowly to avoid the loaches from suffering osmotic shock.

wouldnt you do the amount for the whole tank rather than just the ammount removed, because if you dont do water changes you still have to add correct dosage, but i have been adding the amount for a 55gallon with 20% water changes daily with a full 55gallon dosage

Adding the amount towards the whole tank volume increases the risk of overdosage which can potentially harm the fish and not to mention, beneficial bacteria.

Use copper safe it's the best for ich I've use it a few times 100% good results....I stess the fact that you must follow instruction on the bottle or you will loose alot of fish. Make sure to take out your carbon in the filters.

so im gonna go hit up the lfs tonite see if i can get some better ich medicine, ive also been using api aquarium salt and the temps at like 85 or do you think i should hold off on the medicine and see if the salt and temp works out.

Their site says that the product is reasonably safe on scaleless fish but must be used with caution and treatment stopped with any signs of undue stress. I don't know what the dosing instructions are for Rid Ich+ but I do know that it is a chloride salt of malachite green (which can be harmful to scaleless fish) so be careful.

If you want to go to your local fish store and see if they have another product like the one I recommended that is safe on scaleless fish, then do so. If your going to use something new on the tank then add carbon back into the filter and do a large water change to get rid of the old medication. This is to avoid any type of interaction there may be between 2 different meds. After a few hours and another water change, remove the carbon and add in the new meds.

If you end up using the same medication as you have been then continue with the aquarium salts and increased temp, and continue dosing the meds while observing the fish for additional stress from the meds.

thanks for the info, i actually just bought the stuff you talked about, and was going to ask how to get rid of the old med so i dont mix. now i must decide if i should keep using the rid ich and return the new stuff sense my fish are not showing any signs of stress at all or do remove all the rid ich and use the new stuff
