Can smoking in a house effect a fish tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
seriously ...;) I WOULD BE HESITANT TO TOUCH MEDIA after smoking a cig .but I DONT SMOKE ... (I WASH my hands after taking a dip of snuff befor e hands go in tank..)

IMO:

Both my wife and I just started trying to quit smoking. When you smoke, there is a residue that sticks to you fingers and the walls in your house. So handeling any media. I'd think would rub off onto it or the water. As for the tank itself and the water in it. Id say the only way it would effect the fishes water is if you have a air pump running. When our daughter was born. Our house never even got a hint of smoke in it. So 4 years later. That seams like a real good question. I cant ever imagine smoking in a house since then. But I dont like the idea of washing my hands in my fishes tank neither.

So to sum it all up and to shut me up. Id say wash your habds before and after you take care of your fish. And if you have airpumps in the tank. Your airpump may put the smoke into the water. IMO :)

I always wash my hands before putting them in tank anyway and the only time I smoke around my fish is when Im waiting for the aqarium to fill up. So the lids and everything all pretty much on and all I have to do is turn of the water and plug the filters and heater back in.

Did the OP specifically say cigarette smoke?

:WHOA:

:P my fish are fine from the other smoke. maybe thats why I can do crazy stocks without my fish fighting O_O!

Most of the smoke will diffuse into the air faster then anything else, so if the rooms super air tight I still doubt it would cause a issue but I dont really smoke cigarettes.

The better question is, Does smoking affect you? I'd be more concerned with you smoking than the fish getting sick. The fish have a very very very tiny chance of being affected by the 2nd hand smoke.
