Can snails feel? Oh, God, please say no.

Hmm, well, my tanks are well-covered, there are sponges on my intakes,I don't have a powerhead, I feed all of my tanks fresh veggies and algae discs, and my ph is 7.4, so theoretically I have a good tank for snails? I just seem to have no luck with them. The first one that died was my fault, but the second one was just a weird accident. Maybe it's a sign?

Where are you purchasing your snails? Most of the snails I see for sale at LFS are very unhealthy and underfed. Perhaps part of it is your source for purchase.

I think every animal has the innate ability to try and prevent it's own demise

Not snails. In my experience it's like they seek danger. They're all ingrained with a deathwish.
I've pulled a snail out of an AC110 intake on one end of an 80 gallon tank, placed it in a jungle of vallisneria on the other end of the tank and returned to find the damn thing back in the AC's intake not 5 minutes later. I once again removed him and I tell you, I've never seen a snail move faster. It's like he wanted to die!

However, I guess I was not meant to keep snails. I have some bulbs floating in my tank right now to grow plants from. The other snail climbed up the wall, attached to a bulb and then fell off it while I was getting the net, cracking his shell on a piece of slate. He died overnight. My tank must be like... a snail deathtrap. And you know what? I bet you anything that if I didn't want these snails, they wouldn't be dying.

What more proof do you need? It was snail suicide! If it wasn't then it was daredevil antics and the snail should have expected the worst possible outcome from his bulb-riding thrill.
I think, unless your tank is cushy-padded with moss walls and a moss groundcover to break every single tard-snail fall then a snail would still find a way to injure/end itself in there.
So don't be so hard on yourself. :D

You make me laugh. Anyway, I think I'll wait on the snails for a while, at least until we find some that aren't of the laughinthefaceofdanger type.
