I have been interested in breeding my blue peacock cichlid but I want to be positive on the species before I go looking for females so that I don't end up making hybrids. What do you guys think? Here is a picture: Eclipse.jpg

I don't know, the face looks a little weird. might just be the angle. to get a good id it would be better to wait for the fish to get color since most young peacocks look the same.

There's probably about 15-20 species/variants of blue peacocks. Unless the person who you got him from can tell you what he is, you'll have to wait until he's fully colored to make an educated guess.

I would say female and looks like she is holding. Females are very tough to ID. Sometimes the proper ID is never found on females. But if you loook at the colors, fin designs and body shape you can narrow it down allot. You definately have an Aulonocara species, AKA Peacock cichlid.

i thought he was a male cuz of the pointed anal fine and color. Im assuming he is fully colored because he is a few years old. also he has some kind of white growth under that gill that he has had for a while and i cant get rid of, so his face may seem a lil swallen. its the only african cichid in the tank so i know he isnt holding.

OK so i have taken some more pictures to show that he is not a holding female.
Could anyone tell me what species he is and also what might be the cause of the white growth under his gill on his right side?
The white growth is what is responsible for making him appear like he is holding.
I greatly appreciate any feedback.
