You own a convict, not a black convict, not a white convict, not even a chinese convict, just a regular old convict.

I have convicts, firemouths, and jewel cichlids. I have a few of each that are aggresive and most are quite docile. The only thing you want to keep in mind is that cetrtain types breed very easily like the ones listed above. If you choose to keep mating pairs they will become very very aggresive. But the size of your tank should allow for enough territory for a good amount of fish to live comfortably. Personally i lke the firemouth most of all, they have the most personality, and just look better and better with age, but my convicts breed the most frequently and that is also fun to watch.

I have also found that a few larger non aggresive fish in a large tank like that can also help to drop the agrresiveness in cichlids. it must calm them down. My fm dont mess with my rummy nose tetras but i understand that could change at any moment. giant danios work good

anywqay cichlids are fun because they provide such a diverse personality to a fish population, they are colorful, and you can get different species and different sizes to best suit your tank.

especially with cichlids, please do research first. many are very territorial and aggressive, and may get very large for your tank setup. read up on each specias before you buy anything and make sure they are compatible with both the tank mates you want to keep and the setup and filtration you own. lots of headaches, money and life can be saved by doing research BEFORE you buy. Good luck and welcome to MFK:)

Before you buy your freshwater fish, cichlid or not, make sure you research what you are getting! If you research you will learn what conditions are required, what to feed, how big of a tank you'll need, and compatiable tankmates for the fish you want.

I agree, I really stress researching cichlids. I recommend browsing around until you find a cichlid that interest you and research it. If you have any questions you could always post them here.

Lowcel, your red devil is a beast. :D

Consider the size, temperament, diet and space issues if you want any particular species. Better yet, ask here if you have plenty of questions. Most database are far too broad and confusing especially as they clash with other references. I really feel uncomfortable shoving too many unfamiliar species in the forefront to someone who may still be new to the hobby and becomes overwhelmed by a lot of information.

Awsome pics Lowcel.what camera are you using there?

But yes research research research.

We are lucky we live in an age of internet and all that so we have an unlimited supply of info about all sorts of fish so we can be clued up about every fish we plan to introduce into our taks.

Thanks. I was using a Canon Rebel T1i with a Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens. On all but the rd shot I was using a flash over the tank firing down at an angle with a Gary Fong diffuser.
