that's terrible. hope you get money for it all, although the money doesn't replace the fact that they made a mistake and you had to deal with the reprocusions of their stupidity
Whoaaaaaaa, horror tale. Good luck with claiming back. I know that power outages are not frequent in the developed world - still, it is a good practice (as a backup) to have at least a UPS (the ones they use for computers) to plugg-in a compressor with an airstone.
Currently, i use UPS for two of my tanks ... i have seen a set-up with a car battery (when the power is on, it charges itself, when the power is off, it kicks-in). I am getting those cause UPS gets less effective with time. Another one is oxygen tank but you have to be there to switch it on (fishshops around here do that alot)
I might be able to get a huge UPS system from my office. I just got my budget approved for a new unit, so the old unit is being written off. I have tons of spare batteries for it, so if I can get that, I'll place it in a closet near some of my tanks and hard wire it in. For the power that I would be pulling on it, I could go several days without power.
I definitely plan on filing a claim with them as well as firing off a few letters. I photographed the spoiled food and the dead fish. And if I ever find that idiot that actually turned off my power, I'm just going to have to pull a "Jasonlongboard" and leave him a little present on his car. I'm really praying that dude has a convertible!
IF he has a convertible, put the dead fish and rotten food in it too ( or one week's worth of garbage that has been allow to age in the sun for 2 weeks if no fish and food).

You could also sue them in small claims court if you dont get your claim paid. Most likely you will win by default, because large companies are unlikely to show up.
Even better- if you can get at the service truck the guy uses- put the rotting fish/food/. garbage in the toolboxes- hide it as much as possible. It will take weeks to get all of it out of the boxes. And think of the reminder he will get everyday at work.
