Wow, glad I started this tread! This is very informative!!! I never realized any of this..... Thanks for all the info (especially Oddball! :)) Definitely not going to be using that siphon anymore....... I learn something new from you guys every day!!!!
If you are worried about swallowing siphon water, thry this. take your siphon head to lowes. get a longer hose to fit. I have a 30' hose on mine now.I skip the bucket and go straight to a floor drain, Also, If your fish are healthy and your water isn't dirty, there is little worry. The biggest thing is rout of entry. Stuff has to have a way to enter your body. Either cuts or swallowing it. I am shure that some water chemicals could cause minor skin reactions. Especially salt water tank stuff.
There are very few types of bacteria that can survive ocean salt concentrations. But, shell fish are associated with the real bad bugs. Those that cause cholera.
As for flukes, and tape worms, Only from eating them or their poo.

Not planning on eating pooh any time soon....... Oddball said that lots of people get sick from them and just don't make the association. It's just nice to know because it reinforces the importance of washing your hands and being aware of cuts and things like that. Always wash my hands but truthfully never thought much about having a papercut or something....... Don't have any saltwater tanks so don't have to worry about shellfish!!! :)

only reason i got a baterial infection is cause i work in a store, and i cut myself, and it gets really busy so you dont always have time to wash right afterwards, it wasnt too bad, just some antibiotics and i was all better. if you ever do get an infection in a cut and you think it was from your tank, make sure to tell the doctor you work around fish, they can prescribe a different antibiotic that works better, so im told at least. other than that...i have had water in my mouth before, never a problem there. i do get rashes from the saltwater tanks if im not careful...but i try my best not too! lol

Phiestreria Piscidi infections are on the rise again in the Chesapeake bay region, It is mainly a brackish water and inshore saltwater disease. Never handle wild fish that have large angry looking sores

i never would have thought about getting anything from my fish.......................about 2 years ago i started getting skin sores, oozzing ones, and with in a month i have them all over my body doctors told me it was infected eczema, and gave me antibiotics. who knows could have started from my fish. and still to this day my hands still get small rashes around my cuticuls maybe i should get some gloves, eh?

I had a friend that owned a fish store that died from fish TB. She was in her seventies and had owned and raised fish all her life, so you never know. Her infection started in a finger and eventually spread to her internal organs. She tried to tell her doctors about it, but they said it was just joint problems! It was to late when they finally started treating her for it, even though she had been in excellent health. I also know of another woman in my town who also contracted fish TB, but she was cured in just 2 months with antibotics.

For those who may not know (or never read the package), frozen bloodworms can cause an acute dermatological reaction from simply handling the frozen product. I have to wash with a good disinfectant soap after every feeding or my hands will itch and burn as well as any other skin I touch. I rubbed my eyes once diring a feeding run and my eye turned red and puffed up until I couldn't open it. Had to get an antibiotic shot and benadryl optical ointment in the eye. Not a fun day.

Doesn't sound like a fun day!!!!! Thanks for the tip! Good to know..... Made the mistake of telling my boyfriend about this stuff...... He's afraid of the fish now..... Told him that as long as he is clean about things it's not any worse than going out in large groups of people and touching doorknobs or using public restrooms..... Or swimming in Lake Erie for that matter which we swim in the lake off our boat all the time in the summer..... Should have kept my mouth shut..... :)
