Can you catch anything from fish?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Remind him that even pigeons carry over 60 diseases that can be caught by man, many of them lethal. Nothing is completely safe. They are even saying that teflon causes cancer and cooking in aluminum can lead to Althiemers. Watching football causes brain lesions. Maybe if you get him paranoid about other things he will forget about the fish, heheh.

Ha, ha, ha!!! That or I won't be able to get him to leave the house or eat my cooking!!!! :) I'm sure he'll get over it! He loves the fish almost as much as I do! He pets the oscars and let's my bloodparrot kiss his fingers..... (really the blood-parrot is trying to bite his fingers but her mouth is just too small..... He thinks this is cute so I decided not to tell him the truth! :)) I don't think he could give them up!!!

i know for sure you can catch fish turburculosis....and i have gotten a couple bacterial infections before. (i work in a mom and pop fish store over the summers) that kinda sucked.

How did you know you had a bacterial infection? What were the symptoms?
And how did you cure it? Did a doctor confirm that you did infact have a bacterial
infection? Im just curious because no matter what happens to me , I never go to the doctor, so I would like to know the symptoms..

I assume early symptoms are like any other bacterial infection which is just soreness of the area (sometimes there is no soreness) and feeling a little slugish.
until one day you wake up and your face is swollen the size of a tennis ball, the doctor said he was shocked, that I was very close to death . And this required surgery and antibiotics for months to heal..BTW this was all over an abcess tooth...

My mother caught tb from fishtanks..she took care of several so she could have contracted it from freshwater or saltwater tanks? We will never know. But every time she takes a bloodtest (she says) it says she still has tb(im not sure of this but I am sure that she contracted tuburculosis from one of the many tanks she took care of). She got cut by a coral on her elbow, the cut never healed but turned into a huge boil thing ( very nasty) which finally healed after surgery and antibiotics.

Do not buy sick fish , the more fish you introduce to your fish , the risks for bringing home tb are higher, doctors know little about this and chances are you will have to tell your doctor " I caught Mycobacteria marinum from my fish tank , or he might not find out until it kills you or you loose your finger/hand/arm.

here I found this, it might help?

i scrub my hands before and after cleaning my tanks, with baking soda and warm to hot water, after im all done i wash my hands using purell instant hand sanitizer
, a couple times , then antibacterial soap.
its highly unlikely this will happen to you, unless you work in the fish business,
even petco employees are at high risk. but a good clean home aquairium should not be affected with tb..

I have this one tank that I use for raising fry. The parent fish I believe to have tb, Or something else really serious that I do not know anything about. I noticed one day that there were gobs of planaria everywhere. When changing the water I swallowed like two cups of it, it shot down my throat by mistake .This is the first and only time i've actually swallowed any tank water.. I get it in my mouth all the time.

To make matters worse my boyfriend (who thinks keeping fish is cruel and unusual)
saw me swallow the water and he started screaming" ew your f#$%@&g nasty, im never kissing you or drinking off you again , you have worms in your stomach now!!!!."

He was right ,that tank was so dirty, I had just swallowed planaria/feces/urine/ maybe tb ,
and that tank happen to smell especially like s%&t.
I hope my stomach acids killed the little worms (ew)

I have been infected with MTS my whole life ,,( Multiple Tank Syndrome )

The TB test is a skin test that reveals exposure to the disease. It doesn't mean the disease is active. If the skin test comes back at 2.5mm of reaction, or greater, the PT has an xray taken to check for the active disease. If none is detected, they're administered INH (isoniazid) pills for a regimented prophylactic treatment of the exposure until their skin test comes back below a 2.5mm reaction (1mm preferred after treatment).

With over 100 tanks, I guess I'm a victim of MTS also.

i knew i had a bacterial infection because i had a cut on my finger and the area got really swollen and it was throbbing, i could feel my heart beat in the sore area. it was pretty painful, but nothing that a couple weeks of antibiotics couldnt cure. I too hate going to doctors, but i was leaving to move to my own place up where i go to school, and i needed quick help, haha!
