Can you cross lakes?

yes i have lake vics with my mallawis and some river ones two

What about shellies and mbunas?

Shellies are like 2 inch fish and most mbunas get to 6 inches so that is a definite no no. Not to mention Mbunas are very agressive and would easily kill the shellies.

As for mixing lakes I ve done it - It worked fine it just depends on the fish you want to keep together. It would be nice if you could give us your idea for a stocklist and we can tell you what will and wont work.

when i was keeping chiclids i never had a problem with fish from different lakes together, and learned that because, i couldnt afford 15 tanks at the time. however like was mentioned previously, why mix them, take your time, keep and aquascape for one kind then find a nice LFS that trades and when you get tired or bored, tear it down and start over, Variety is the spice of life......unless you ask my wife she never agrees with me about nothin
