I am so excited I finally found an EBJD, but he hids all the time I never see him, even If I sit and watch the whole feeding time. I just get this feeling like he is going to sit in there and starve to death. I am half tempted to rip out all the hiding spots, but then he might get over stressed.

Tanks mates.

1 5"ish Oscar, 1 3"ish Texas, 1 5" Rainbow shark, 2 6"ish bala Sharks.

I feed sometimes hikari gold "small" cichlid pellets "Color Enhancing", and sometimes Wardley Premium Cichlid Slow Sinking Crumbles.

I then also feed algae wafers for the rainbow and balas, and mix that up with Wardley Premium Tropical Slow Sinking Crumbles, and sometimes Wardley Shrimp pellets.

When I did see him eat he used to try and eat the hikari but couldn't fit it in his mouth so he would grab it and spit it out a couple times. Then I noticed he was eating the slow sinking Crumbles.

I was over feeding the Crumbles so that it would have a chance to sink into the rocks so he could have a chance to eat while he hides. However I can't do this any more since I lost a Bala, he went insane and ate everything and bloated out and died.

my festae does the same.. Just leave it alone. It will come out to look for food when it feels safe. Some fishes take a while. I had a midas that was so shy it took him about a month to start eating. Just chill out. Be patient and let the fish adapt.

Wait. Other fishes might be hurting it and scaring it. Watch out for that.

yeah if he is a more shy dempsey then the more boisterous O and Tex could be intimidating him, how big is he and how long have you had him? if you just got him then just be patient and let him get used to the new tank, and if he is way smaller than the others you might want to grow him out in a smaller tank so he can concentrate on growing without having to compete for food GOOD LUCK and make sure to watch out for parasites!

I should have placed him in the 10 gallon to grow, he died today. I came home from work, he was sitting on the bottom alive but kinda sitting at an angle. I thought it was the current so I shutdown the pump, he just stayed there. His breathing was a little strange but nothing to be alarmed about. I watched him while I feed and he never tried to move or eat. Then I saw him move a little, and then I saw him swim for a minute. I thought maybe I was over reacting and he was okay.

I did my normal water change, and when I finished he was dead. The tank drop 2 degrees during the water change.

edit: while he was just sitting there I had my face close to the tank to inspect him, My O and Tex came up to me multiple times and never once bothered him. I never saw any of the other fish mess with him, not even my bully rainbow shark. He was in my tank for 2 weeks. Dang I just realized I could have returned him, but I flushed him, oh well live and learn.

ebjd if not kept with non aggressive fish eg tetras congos and fish like that the other fish will make a meal of him ... or pick on him for future ebjd take your oscar and texas out nd keep only your bala sharks with him ....
sorry for your loss.. i did the same thing i learnt from my mistakes :)
i guess i have bought a few ebjds ...

Mouthing and spitting out of food is generally a bad sign with ebjds. It often indicates an issue with the intestinal parasites that they are prone to.

sorry he died . . . they can be fragile, especially at young age (parasites are a problem, as noted above)

I was about to suggest that you house him alone - - even in a small tank - - until he can pack on some size. my EBJD was never picked on by his tankmates, but they out-competed him for food . . . now that he is on his own, he is finally able to get enough to eat . . .
