Well my oscars did that till they got use to wc's then they were cool and always come out when i go to the tank!

Thank you all, I always feel like I am learning something or learning from some mistake; guess I picked a good signature.

most likly he was stress and the WC stress him out more.. sorry for ur loss man!

Mine was afraid of guppies. He hid behind a rock and wouldn't come out to eat. I thought, "If this cichlid is actually afraid of what it should be eating, I'm not going to encourage its survival". Poor guy. Maybe if I'd isolated him and got him a little beefed up he would've made it. Oh well.

Sorry To revive but I am up for round two. Picked up a new EBJD at petland "My new Favorite Chain."

He is in a 10 Gallon tank with a rock for him to hide in. The tank is bare bottom, water temp is kept around 80. I have a Old Fluval 403 as the filter loaded up with the bio media from the main tank. Also the water from the 10 gallon is the water I took out of the main tank for a water change.

How long should I keep him isolated? maybe until he is 2" or should I aim for 3". I would say currently he is about 1".

Okay so I have been doing more research and I can see 3" is the minimum upon which I should even think about moving him. It also seems that I should be doing 50% water changes per week, but I was thinking might be less stressful to do 10% a day.

I am welcoming all advice from anyone who has kept these fish. I don't have a UV unit and can't really go buy one. I was going to feed once a day but seeing that maybe I should be feeding 2 or 3 times? I went out and bought water testing kits, I am almost afraid to use treated tap water since it it has ammonia in it, but then stealing a gallon a day from the main tank will give me higher nitrates.

your tap has ammonia?!? and yes def feed 2-3 times a day when he is little, i continue to feed twice a day with all my cichlids but some people go down to once a day once they are bigger (5in or so) as long as you keep up with wc then a uv sterilizer shouldnt be neccessary, especially since its a bare bottom tank, also you didnt say, so i am going to go ahead and reccomend you treat him with all 3 rounds of jungle parasite clear since you got him from a lfs, i think yours will do fine with 50% once a week, thats what i did with mine and he actually enjoyed the big water change and would swim right in the stream of new water (that is until he killed himself in a shell :( )

Yes it has Ammonia in the form of chloramines. Thanks for the reply, I will start him on some anti parasitic today. Yes I have to get going on the water changes, my wife wants to beat me. Old fish water, plus the old uncleaned filter floss, sitting in the 10 gallon in our living room = stinky.

lol yeah i can imagine that water wouldn't smell to good lol, but yeah once your done with the meds then he should do great and what kind of de-chlor do you use? I use Prime and it gets rid of chlorine/chloramines/ammonia so you could just get that and then do wc straight from the tap
