just the males, the females tend to be a brighter blue though and they dont get fat ass claws like the males.

i guess that means mines a male too, and that i have never seen a female red claw for sale in AUS

That's strange, you would think you would see just as many females as males. I mean the males have to be coming from somewhere, right? :D I've actually never seen a male for sale around here where I live in the US. I think people are more interested in getting a really bright blue crayfish around here, so the females sell better. Maybe they are shipping all of your females over here to us... :grinno:

we have plenty of other blue crays over here destructor, electric blue etc so i think the red claw males sell mainly because of the red/purples they get as males

my red claw was actually bought as a feeder for my oscar but he hid and has grown to be about 4" so im keeping him now

the red on the claw develops with age so if you have only seen baby ones for sale then this might explain why !!!

hi new member here but i breed these guys and i can say that without any doubt its a female cherax quad. these dont grow quite as big as the m,ale ones with the red tipped claws but still a good size compared to other species

welcome its nice to have more cray lovers here in the uk but i have to disagree with you about males outgrowing females, i have had females far larger than males sometimes the fact that males have larger claws can be deceiving but as a general rule of thumb females grow slightly larger.

In the wild, Males get WAY, WAY bigger than Females.
Especially as the yrs roll by.

Here's why..........

The wild females expend so much energy producing and caring for their eggs. They don't grow nearly as fast.

The males just carry on eating, growing & looking for other chicky babes :hearts:

The same is true for captive crays if male & female are kept together.
Both M & F will grow bigger and much faster if they're kept in single sex tanks.
