I would find three 5-gallon buckets, that is water tight, and then build this filter.

Thank you for posting this. This will be the pail I will use in my next version of the pail filter.
OP: I don't know what type of flow you would like to get out of this filter, but 4" may clog up pretty quickly.
I have been thinking of buying the large whole house filters as well. The have about 80 times the surface area in side a housing not that much bigger than 6-8" in diameter. This is why the Fx5 was designed the way it was with the sponges around the outside.
