Bought a Cascade 500 to add more mech filtration to one of my tanks. My first canister. I am positive this model sucks, but just wanted to learn the ropes inexpensively before investing in heavier equipment. Any canister advice? Thinking of doing an FX on my 75 Native tank.

My advice is to dive in, and read the instructions. :D They aren't hard to use at all... unless your a moran.

Too late, I did that. It's running fine, but the instructions say to prime it 4 times. It took 37 times.

Haha, I don't bother with priming. I just shut valves, fill the lines, place the intake and return, open valve and plug in.

I have an XP3 on my 75G and love it. Maintenance is a breeze. Never tried the FX5, so I can't comment on the ease of maintenance.

Careful WyldFya, remember what happened when they said "So easy a caveman can do it".

Don't worry, having a canister will only make you hate cleaning them once you get a wet/dry.
