Canister filter training wheels....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Man, is this a MOD thread or what? Lonewolfblue, you are the goose in a pond of ducks!!

I have an xp3, a Jebo 828, and an Aquarclear 6000 from like 1990. XP3 is bada$$. Jebo has like no pressure, but cleans amazingly. Aquaaclear barely runs. All are simple to clean. Basically just take out the baskets, clean the foams, wash out the canister, and put it all back together. And priming? Ahh, no!! Just fill the tubes with the valves closed. Good luck.

Stand by for hose funk.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I never had a use for canisters, so I never bought one.

I am positive this model sucks, but just wanted to learn the ropes inexpensively before investing in heavier equipment.

I have had that model and the two above it running for about 3 years with no problems and very little mantainence. It is a cheap filter, but it is effective.

I would not suggest using and FX filter though. That is one line of canisters I don't like... and I like canisters. The FX5 might win me over, but them 304, 404 and others like them... not very good filters IMO.

Why don't you like the lower level Fluvals?

I have one and it does suck. PITA to clean, high bypass, and low power. I don't like cans but I'll take an XP over a fluval.

How about Eheim? I have heard nothing but good things...

With canisters it will depend on who you ask. If you ask Harley or me, and a bunch of the members we will recommend eheim. They are built far better IMO then most other filters. I don't like the older models of Fluval, but the FX5 has broken the old thoughts of the fluval. Cascades are decent filters. The XP3's and the line are really good. To each his own. I'm sure if you ask Rally which canister he likes best he'll tell you a wet/dry. :D
