I don't think they are really needed for freshwater. But hey the SunSun filters have a UV light in them (albeit an underpowered one). I'm loving the silence of my house now that I installed the SunSun and took off the Emperor and Whisper HOB filters. I had to touch it to make sure it was still running this morning.

QUIET IS GOOD! After previously running an external return pump on my diy sump on my 80 gal, and that used to be in my bedroom, silense is the name of the game! :grinyes:

After I reworked it and fully submerged the pump it was like night and day with the noise level. Anyways back to the point, the quietness amd uv sterelizers seem to be defenite pluses on the sunsun.

A used Rena XP3 normally sells for $60. I bought two of them used and they are working welll after a year or so. You can buy two of them for about $120. But with used stuff, you are always taking a chance if it will last or not.

I will defenitely be trolling craigslist for a couple used filters over the next few days. Everyone is just so set on selling the "package deals" its hard to get them to split it up

Make another DIY sump and you can probably get better filtration for less money. Sounds like you have some experience with sumps too.

That's probably what I will do. Especially since the bottom is drilled on the 150. I have just never owned a canister filter before so I was exploring my options. I guess I am building my stand, so I might as well build my filtration too. Haha. I just do the storage bin/bucket sump style. Its not pretty, but SUPER cheap :D

Its really just coming down to craigslist for a canister filter I think! I work evening shift, so I have plenty of time, so I might start on it after I build the stand next week. That's if CL doesn't pan out.

i got a xp3 and the jebao knock off ehiem. I personaly dont like my xp3. its brand new and doesnt seal all the way when i latch it down. The ehiem knockoff. Is quiter to me anyway. has more trays. i just like my knockoff beter

I agree with True Love (how could you not?) A 150 is a big tank and one even expensive cannister might not be enough. If you have experience with sumps that's what I'd do, no matter the cost.

Let us know what you decide and of course POST PICS!!!!

Yeah, A sump is the way i am leaning towards. Does anyone else just stare at their empty tank project for long periods of time just trying to imagine what it will look like finished? I have spent SOME TIME staring at this tank. And I think I am taking a little of everyone's advice. I think I am making a Lowes run this weekend and am gonna get all the supplies to build me a sump. Then eventually I will buy a canister filter too, so I can have double filtration! In case one fails. I thought about it alot today, and thats what I am going with. Should I use the drilled bottom for the sump? Or do a side hanging overflow?

And last question.... How am I gonna convince my wife to let me spend money this weekend?.... Its buttering up time :naughty:

Oh and I will post pics of the whole build for sure. I am thinking of making a beginners guide to building sumps MFK style
