Canister filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i say a fluval fx5 would be good, don't know how much they cost there tho

i would rather not buy over the net plus i have no cred card. but if i can find some here i will definently look into puchasing some. just do you guys know here is the filtration system im thinking. My tank is 630 litres. 2 canister filters. i already have 1 it is rated to 400 litres and has a built in UV sterilizer. i would now like to purchase one more filter. Either a fluval fx5,404. some kind of eheim, or possibly a rena. what i am asking is for $350AU or $290 american what is a good filter avaible in australia?

yeh another thing anyone own an fx5 in brisbane, if so where did you buy it from and how much?same thing for rena xp3's and some eheims. i am willing to travel to southside. or maybe xp4's also whats a dirtiness entrance

FX5 is primarily a mech filter. The 404's are not good filters at all IMO. The 2260 would be the best for adding chemical/biological filtration to the tank. Talk to your LFS, they should be able to order in the eheims. Most shops don't stock a lot of eheims due to their cost. When I got my Pro 3 and pro 3e, both were special order filters. The 2080 ran $319 filled, and the 2078 ran $304 no media, but I get ehfisubstrat pro at cost so I only paid $25 for that, and had enough ehfimech and ehfisubstrat pro laying around to fill the rest of the filter.

i can't help ya with where to find something in Australia, i'm in Southern CA in the USA.. and i still struggle a little with Australian geography. And the few people that i know in Australia aren't fish keepers so i wouldn't even have anyone to ask.

BUT, i will say that if it's available there, the fluval 405 is a big step up from the 404 and we can buy them all day long for less than $100 US. You should have very little trouble affording 2 of those on your budget.

yeh so what is chemical filtration is it like peat?? i was heading towards the xp4 buuuuuutttttt i will call round the lfs tommorow to see which filters they can get/stock. how can you tell which filters do best mechanical filtration, chemical, biological??

Odd that the large number of fluval 405's on my tanks work perfectly while the two Eheims lasted less than a week before having to be returned.
One LFS in fact has 35 404's running and 10 of the newer 405's. They sell all brands and could easilly have used any of them.

The Fx5 by the way is far more than simply a mechanical filter. Besides having the only chip controled motor and twice the flow rate of anything in its class it has more capacity than they do as well, bio and/or mechanical.

My point to all of this is that BEST is a very relitive term. It's better and more constructive to just give personal expierances and technical data when available and avoid the old...this rules and thats junk line because its what you've heard.

so i can get the eheim 2080 pro 3 for $319 american? and the 2078 pro 3e for pro 3e for 304$ american??? do theese filters do bio, chem and mech filtration??

All cannister filters by their very nature can use just about any combination of media that you want or need. You can run ALL bio media if thats what you need or all mechanical. Chemical filtration is usually carbon...zeolite...peat that sort of thing. Cannisters generally have a stack of baskets that the water flows through that you can fill however you like and of course you can change the configuration as your needs change.
Parts availability is another major issue so it's always best to go with the system thats the most commonly available in your area. Your cannister does you no good at all if it fails and you have to wait 3 to 6 weeks to get a $4.00 replacement part.

Again... Check your information. The FX5 has all that foam, which is primarily a mechanical media. Eheim 2076 and 2078 both are chip controlled pumps. The eheim 2262 is a 2260 with a pump that pushes 900gph, which is the same claim as an FX5. check this link In that link, the FX5 is reduced from the 3500 lph rated, to 1991 lph. The eheim pro 3 only boasts 1700 lph, but gets 1200lph. Eheims are known for their pumps that don't slow down easily. The 2262 is without question an output filter, and will out perform the fx5 in output. The FX5 only houses 25 L of foam, and 6 liters of bio-media, to the 2080s 12L of bio, 2 liters of foam, or the 2260s 18L of bio.

It isn't a simple mech filter, but its primary function, and design was for mechanical filtration.

I have experience with fluval's full line, and much of eheim's line. You might want to research well, before you make statements like that. The FX5 has a design to be a mech filter, and operates as such. I have experience owning, or operating the FX5, 405, 404, 304, 403, eheim 2217, 2260, 2080, 2076, 2078, 2028, 2026, 2215, 2236, rena xp1, xp3, ca-1000, and cascade 1500. I have tried many of the canisters out there, and speak from experience, as well as common sense.
