Canister for 130

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
for 200$ get the fx5. I will never waste cash on another filter besides a fx5 or 2260

It would be really dumb if you didn't. That way when you upgrade it will be another filter you can use to filter a larger tank.. Or make a sump.

Its like buying a pick up truck for working with it.

Ford f150
or
Ford Ranger

f150 is a little more expensive but so much more capable for the little extra cost.

If you are considering the FX5 I highly suggest you consider a Pressurized Pond Filter such as the BioForce 2000...

It can deliver twice the flow rate with twice the media capacity at the same price as the FX5...

The biggest difference you will find is you don't have all the common problems that the FX5 comes with...

yea pump is sold separately though, and its not as clean looking for tank use. Especially in such a small system as a 130. A pond filter is always a great idea though.

Pump + Filter costs the same as an FX5...

Not as clean looking? It's hidden under the tank, just like the FX5 or any other filter should be...

It worked great on my 125 gal for years...

It's not the best choice for everyone but it is always a better choice than an FX5...

I would rather have that thing run a system. I just don't like how the pump has to be in the tank, just worries me about leaks. Your right though, way more for the money.

The pump doesn't have to be in the tank...

When I used this fitler on my 125 gal aquarium I used a Mag 12 pump as an external pump, meaning it was used inline and under the tank in the stand.

That sounds too complicated. Wouldn't it be easier to just get the fx5 and set it up with instructions that show you step by step exactly what to do, rather than buy a pond filter and a pump, then have to figure out on your own how to set it up and hope you don't screw up and flood your house? (btw, sorry for the run-on sentence, I couldn't decide on a better way to put that... :nilly:)

It would be easier to buy the FX5 and follow the step by step instructions... But it is much more cost efficient to use the Pressurized pond filter and an external pump...

Placing the pump inline is exceptinoally easy. If you couldn't figure it out you should not attempt to assemble the FX5.

But you will have to create your own intake/outlet. Which may be something some people are not interested in doing.

Personally I think the vast majority of us would be willing to accept this challenge if it yielded the result of twice the flow rate and twice the media capacity for the same price.

But naturally others would rather take the 'plug and play' approach...

Everything in life comes with pros and cons and it's up to each of us to consider them and decide what works best for us. I just feel the Pressurized Pond filter is rarely given fair consideration. I've used one for years and have been extremely pleased with the result. But besides me I don't know anyone else who has used one indoors...

The FX5 is the one & only filter I've used on my 125 gallon aquarium. I have not had one problem w/it in the 3 years it's been in use. I feel it is doing a fine job for me, & have no problem recommending one to people w/a similar sized aquarium.
I'm not a FX5 fan boy, I just don't have experience w/anything else in my 125gal. to compare it with.

A Pressurized pond filter maybe a better choice, I can't say though, since I've never used one. However, you would think that since they are built to last outdoors, that they would last even longer indoors, I don't know.

Good luck to the O.P. in your filter hunt, & whatever you get, hang on to the receipt. lol
