Canister or HOB?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have had good results with using multiple HOBs on tanks larger than 30 and if someone is that concerned about extra bio, you could add an HOB filled with just a bio media or sponges or scrubbies, or even add a sponge filter. sponge filters are greatly overlooked and are a great addition to any tank if you can either hide the sponge or don't mind the sponge being visible

I know you on a personal quest to defilter MFK, but considering you have yet to post a pic of any type awe-inspiring, jaw dropping tank. I'm just not buying into it.

It's hard to beat a pair of AC110s and a quality canister on a 150 gallonish tank.

If you disagree with any details that I have shared I invite you to debate them anywhere I've posted...

But inaccurately summarizing my ideas and disagreeing with your misleading summary is useless...

I've never suggested anyone "defilter" their tank... my show tanks exceed the commonly recommended "10 times turnover filtration"... therefore your suggestion reflects your ignorance of anything I've posted.

Here is a thread I started sharing my 125 gal tank… As the title suggests... picture heavy... http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=255142

I do encourage people to understand what they "need" and then work from there. I do encourage people to filter their tanks intelligently as opposed to slapping on the most expensive filter filled with the most expensive media...

What do you want pictures of?

My fishroom?

I will confess here as I admit elsewhere, I had to break it down when I moved this past January... but I learned a lot and explored a lot while establishing it...

My 175 Gal tier filtered by a single AC 110 and a 700 gph pump? You can see many of them in the above pic, here is a close up.

I confess that one is lightly stocked at the time of the picture. As anyone with a fishroom will tell you, they are rarely set up to be photo friendly as maximizing tank spaec is far more important. I still have one set up in my apartment and have two more in storage...

I can clutter this thread with a lot of single tank pics of the fishroom with heavier stocks if you want…

A pair of bare bottomed 75 gals with 10 gal fry tanks plumed to each? Filtered by a single AC 110 and a couple of powerheads to feed water into the 10 gals?

I've recently mentioned a bare 10 gallon tank I am doing a fishless cycle on to perform a couple "Bio Filtration experiments on... this is the one I'm talking about...

When you are ready to debate logic let me know. But next time you feel the need to simply buck up with nothing to back it don’t bother posting…

Agreed.

I don't own any canisters, would love a FX5 but don't have the dough. So I can only speak on HOB's.

I really really like the Emp 400's, I own 2. They get the job done, and the bio-wheels are great for BB. They are filthy as can be, but loaded with BB. I've never owned a AC110, so I'm a bit biased, but who isn't.

5 hobs
2 canisters
4 combo

may I ask we stick to the opinions on choice of filtering & explicate from there?

we need not opine on someone's else's views or counter point. I can respect both sides of the coin but hope we don't venture off the beaten path, & get hijacked!

thank u all!

Sushiray... I apologize to you for my defensive outburst above...

Nutcase - So you have 2 AC110s, 2 Magnum HOT, and a Magnum 350 on the 125?

At the time that post was made, yes… I’ve since disconnected the Magnum 350 as I felt running 3 micron cartridges on a single tank was excessive…

I am just curious why you ran so much filtration on a tank just two weeks ago when you have such ample experience.

Your pics clear up alot, I now understand why you don't need any bio media...you are very understocked(nothing wrong with that)

Very nice:thumbsup: Now this tank is much more like it, though it doesn't look as if you are filtering it with a single AC110

Your pics seem to contradict your words:screwy:

As I have said... debate anything I've posted... where has anything I've said been contradicrted... be specific as we've all see what you can do with your ignorant summaries...

Your challenge has been met... feel free to step up or... the alternative...
