i prefer the canister filter, only reason being my old HOB got backed up and drained my tank onto my floor to the bottom of my intake.

ok, but keep in mind canister filters can have accidents too . . . :)

After my clean out ordeal couple of weeks ago of my Fluval204 with crud flushing out upon startup siphoning & then receiving feedback that others had similar experiences - then doing a complete clean out tonite including the intake & return tubes - repeating the crud flush out - multiple times (so much was still in them after last clean up), I am opting to buy another AC unit.

Canisters may be good for many but the Fluval has a tendency to catch crud in it's coiled tubes & w/o members giving us a heads up - so many will have an unpleasant experience as I did.

Anyone else have similar crud experience with Fluvals or other brands?

Any filter that is used to take in waste... has to be cleaned regularly...

Not doing so allows the waste to break down into this crud or sludge which causes all sorts of problems...

The myth that canister filters do not need to be cleaned frequently needs to be stopped...

It is true that canister filters can be set up to only need to be cleaned every month or two, but this requires making sure no waste/debris is collected in them. This requires an adequate prefilter, which needs to be cleaned often...

The amount of internet myths I see forced onto innocent newer hobbyists asking for recommendations is pathetic...

I admit it was quite dirty but I just cleaned it 2wks ago, I was hoping monthly but the way my discus load is going not possible. Just irks me the design of the tubing is the cause of crud collecting/sticking to the inner tubing. If the media was overloaded it should just be shot back out into the tank continuously, not get stuck to build up over time. that's my beef!

canister filters are awesome and i love AC HOBS but, all other HOBS can go to hell..:D

Eheim and fluval canister filters are my favorite. for eheim the classic series and the pro series are golden! for Fluval... i really just like the FX 5...thats just me..

agree with AC's! but your canister choices are too pricey for me. for my little freebie fluval204, some have recommended smooth bore tubes as replacements (buy at home depot or lowes), so my canister may have a 2nd life. but still getting another AC!

true, i understand that price can be an issue for some. personally, $300 for a decent canister filter isn't asking a lot. however, someone with little to no income may feel differently; and i understand and respect that. there's also the option of buying used.

also, the eheim classic series isnt too bad money wise...again its all about what ur income is...

u should expect to pay at least $75 for a decent brand new canister filter...if this is too much.. maybe ur in wrong hobby?

It all depends on the tank and the bio needs of the tank. I have a bunch of ac110s, emperor 400s and a couple canisters. I prefer the ac's over the emperors. They are easier to clean and move a ton water. They are easy to add carbon if needed too. I have a couple of fluval 404's that I really like too. big bio load on a 90 gallon and an ac110 and one of the 404's and it is spotless.

just got my ac70, going to put it in my angel's 20gal & trf the ac110 to my discus 72gal BF so I will then have dbl ac110's, then take the fluval204 out of svc. I have a DIY pvc extention tube with 2 strainer intakes at bare bottom level, the 2nd one will have it's intake strainer mid level in tank so hopefully I get some nice filtration action going!
