I've nearly finished building my new 280g tank and will have my 4x2x2 prety much empty (will have a couple of polypterus's growing out in there for a month or two) and want to get a cichlid pair in there. I have a wild Caught Oscar but thats going into the new tank as it should get to a decent size. I like the look of Red Terror's but been advised my tank will be too small for life for a pair. I am thinking of going with a a couple of pair's of Discus or something else . I'm totally stuck for idea's on what to have.

I don';t want something that's going to hide all day and i dont want anything that doesn't get more than 10-12inch when fully grown, fish must not be too dull either. Not overly fussed if it'll need to be a species tank or not. I like the look of Dovi and Jag's but obviously they get to big for the tank.

Any suggestions welcome!

Cheers Ben

i would not put a pair in there with the polypterus they will eat the babies and the pair could kill the ploys.

Poly's can be moved , theyre only in there until they get big enough not to be eaten by my others.

As to what i have access to well tbh pretty much most thing's through importers. I don;t want anything too common, only have the oscar because it looks differernt than the standard CB ones.

Anything Amphilophus!! Here are a list that you can order in colored variants.

Labiatus - Red Devil
Cintrinellus - Midas
Xiloaensis
Sagittae

Trimacs and Lyonsi though only have one color pattern, but its very colorful.
Trimaculatus - Trimac
Lyonsi

Can't go wrong with Amphilophus, and in a 280g tank they should be fairly mellow compared to one you could have in a 125g. lol

If you like Parachromis dovii and managuensis, you could consider Parachromis motaguense, loisellei or friedrichsthalii. Closely related and similar in appearance to the dovii and managuensis, but a pair should fit comfortably in a 4x2x2'.
