I have AC110's on all of my tanks. I have the setup that comes in the box. the sponge, the carbon filter, and the biological media that are shaped like cylinders. I have seen a couple people state that they didnt need the carbon. Is this true? How would you recommend I set them up. I have never had a problem.

Inquiring minds want to know, and that includes me...I like using carbon personally, I think it helps clarify and take impurities out of the water and takes away any odor....

There are three different ways I have done it....

1. ditch the carbon bag and media add a second sponge...
2. ditch the carbon bag and add more media (bio-rings,etc).
3. ditch the carbon bag and add some filter floss(100% polyester) between the sponge and media.

I currently run my like the first way. But that is because I have a wet/dry on the same tank for the bio filtration

I only use carbon for removing meds, also the bag with the ac110 usually bust open and make's a huge freaking mess.

so what am i losing when i ditch the carbon bag? what am i gaining when i add a sponge?

Ummm..... your losing chemical filtration and gaining mechanical filtration.

Also remember carbon don't last long, atleast in my experience with using it.

haha, ok I knew that. well, I guess what I need to know is how important is the chemical filtration?

Imo the tiny bit of carbon in the bag isnt enough to accomplish very much.not worth worrying about putting it in.

I don't use carbon in any of my tanks unless I have to remove meds or if there's a particularly bad odor (which usually won't happen with proper water changes). My preference would be to use 1 sponge and the biomax. I don't have biomax in most of mine though because I got them all before they started including the biomax.
