i dont quite understand what u mean by get more mech. and when u say rinse, u mean rinse my biowheels? thnx in advnaced.

also you can get mech/filter floss(100% poly batting) cheap if you go to a craft/fabric store and by it be the yard or roll... if you have to clean your bio wheels use tank water, I have never cleaned mine.

and carbon is only good to remove meds

Activated carbon performs other important tasks in the aquarium as well, removing toxic dissolved gasses such as hydrogen sulphide and methane, which result from imperfect water circulation. It acts as a catalyst to quickly convert dissolved chlorine gas to relatively harmless hydrogen chloride. It provides crystal clear water by removing minute suspended solids and colloids - those particles too small to be trapped by filter floss. It helps defend aquarium life on some occasions of accidental introduction of toxic substances such as pesticides, paint fumes, cigarette fumes and the like. The effectiveness of an activated carbon for aquarium water purification depends on several factors which include total available surface area, pore size distribution, pore volume and particle size. Yet activated carbon is not well understood in the aquarium field - particularly in the salt water world. Improperly used, it can wipe out a tank of expensive fish overnight. Generally, planted-tank aquarists do not use activated carbon for fear of losing trace elements needed by the plants. Activated Carbon should not be used in your aquarium because it practically "uncycles" your tank. It should only be used as a reset button. By that, I mean if your tank got an epidemic and many fish got wiped out. Sometimes the cause can be difficult to determine, so in such cases, you may with to reset your aquarium. Activated Carbon causes a chain reaction that practically undo an established aquarium. When first used in an aquarium, it immediately start absorbing ammonia plus other elements I will not mention. Without ammonia, first stage bacteria starves to death. Without first stage bacteria that converts ammonia to nitrites, second stage bacteria dies. Without your beneficial bacteria, your tank basically reverts to become an uncycled tank. So personally, I don't use carbon.;)

u think it'll b ok for me to use carbon on 1 side of the filter..and use more floss or biomax on the other side?

if you're trying to eliminate the cons of using carbon filtration, im thinking any carbon in the filter is not a good idea.
just go the whole way and eliminate the carbon. if you keep up the tank maintenance, you shouldnt notice a decline in your tank at all. i got rid of all carbon when i couldnt figure out any other possible reason for HITH developing in some of my fish. months later, the fish are all looking better minus the carbon. good luck

im using biomax on my 400 from ac nomore carbon for me....plus my fish look good and healthy..

thnx guys..i think imma go home n take the carbon out.

i stopped using it and noticed no difference in the fish i keep a small whisper filter in my cabnet incase i need to use it to remove meds thats it

Any word on whether or not the carbon bags host beneficial bacteria at all?

I mean, if I just take mine out all at once, will it affect the bio levels?

Just curious.

Undey
