No...You should only need it if your removing chemicals (medications).

It does have it's place, I always have some around.

How often do you change the carbon in them?

If you have a good biological setup going it filter remove most problems.

Got any pix of your new system?

I agree with DrJoe. :)
I've not used carbon for anything other then removing chemicals for about a year now.

Carbon does remove the smell from fouled water, but that's just an indicator ya need to do a water change, not run stuff to remove the odor.

Carbon is just a waste of money IMO (I keep an emergency supply on had as well)

I like to use carbon on a regular basis.

Usually I use it in conjunction with another product I have found that works well with it, "Sweet Baby Ray's" BBQ sauce
