care sheet from petstore

Yea, thats real good for the newbies to the hobby, except for the size of tank and comparable tankmates. But then again, if its a worthwhile sales person they would explain the size issue with the oscar as well as the tankmates.

I think that its a very respectable move by the fish store to finally at least attempt to help out the fish they sell. Next maybe carnivals who have comet or common goldfish for prizes in solo cups.
Agreed tank size is small for an oscar that has grown.

I agree.

just got e-mail back from them here it is
Not at all. A single oscar in a 30 gallon is just fine. I have kept them in 29’s before. And most hobbyists that show fish will even keep them in 20’s. The important thing is that it’s by itself. And a pair can easily be kept in a 55. Most breeders use 40 gallons for pairs.

Well, after being told by a Petco "pro" a few years ago that I could kepp 3 O's and 2 JD's in a 29 for their entire lives I find this to be a bit refreshing.

that fact sheet is average!! disagree with the tank sizes they've got there, and with there aggression, havent seen a real go-ey oscar in years!

I had a single oscar in a 30g 25 years ago.My wife still talks about how sad it was that big fish just hovering there.Even a 55g is too small for an oscar.75g is the minimum I would keep an oscar in these days

At least it was an attempt to educate the beginner hobbyist about the Oscar. I disagree with the tank size/aggression/tank mates, but what the heck...it's a start. I've seen much worse, as in Petsmart having Jaguar cich's labeled as beginner, and a max tank of 20 gallons.
