Hi,

I'm after black sand for my tank, I have in the past brought black sand and when its in the tank it doesn't look black at all looks kind of brown.

After watching loads of youtube videos I found that this sand: Caribsea Super Natural Tahitian Moon Black Sand, is jet black and some reviews also say its jet black.

Has anyone else used this sand and give me some opinions? I want to know for sure its jet black because its not cheap!

Thanks

Here is a link to the company selling them:

Haven't used that stuff but it looks awesome. And you're right it is expensive. Black blasting sand or whatever the hell you call it is a low cost alternative found at tractor supply stores. Then there is color quartz sand which I use and love. A little hard to find in some area's though.

Just saw your location so I think color quartz is out but the blasting sand may be available. Hopefully some of your mate's from across the pond can help you out.

So I have just read that this contains some magnetic bits, is this safe for fish?

Pretty sure there is no problem with this product as being toxic or harmfull. Here in the states it is sold in major pet store chains. I would think that you could run a magnet through it to remove the magnetic pieces if you wanted. The stuff looks really good in tanks and I was going to purchase it until I found a cheaper alternative.

I have black diamond blasting media in a 10g and Tahitian moon sand and the moon sand is clearly a superior product. The black diamond does have a brown tone to it and it is by far the dirtiest sand I have ever bought, took 2-3 times the rinsing as playsand. The moon sand is definitely black and clean. It is also very fine and I suspect it will get kicked up easily like playsand but I have a betta and shrimp in the tank so I can only assume. If you can afford the moon sand I would go that route between the two.

Yeah I really want to get the caribsea Tahitian moon sand but just want some more input on people who use it as I have read it has magnetism bits in which may possibly harm fish. Can anyone who uses it or know people who use it give some advice?! Thanks
