I would be worried about the adhesive they use on the weatherstripping...you can get foam or floss and do the same thing by just pushing down in the space after you load the top basket. That's how I did it...but in all honesty I didn't really see a difference in the water parameters, and I have to clean it out the same 1 time monthly...I use the 1500 on a 49 bow front...

Agreed. The adhesive would be a concern, but you can also use silicone.

no need for silicone, just tuck filter floss into the space...

silicone would be a bad idea-bc how would you get the baskets out after you siliconed them in place for cleaning and replacements?filter floss sounds alot better-good idea zen and mcgyver for starting the thread even though I honestly had no clue where you were going with it?
1 question I have is I think by plugging those sides up it would restrict water flow.I know it would force the water to have to be filtered though so not sure if that would harm the motor in the long run by making it work harder to pump out.

these pumps don't work or wear any harder if the are restricted or not... they are a centrifugal design and not positive displacement...
It is just an electromagnetic field and a permanant magnet, that spins in the field...
