I think a 4 line pim would be OK if you could find a big one. Ditto big Synodontis cats. If your pacu etc. aren't eating your senegalus they won't eat your 4 line etc. Lima cat works too, but they're pretty active.

Re: bullheads, if you want a smaller one try local creeks/rivers/ponds, if that's an option. Every bully I ever kept came from a pond. Another option, check out the LFS feeder tanks, depending on their source you could see little bullies in there, that's actually the only ones I've ever seen at LFS.

Dang, is there any cat that would work for my tank?:(
i didnt mean would i meant COULD, there is a chance that they would cohab great, but there is also a chance that a bullhead would go after some of ur smaller fish. i think a lima shovelnose catfish is ur best option imo, but it depends on what ur looking for and what risks u r willing to take

Yeah, I don't think I'd be willing to risk it. Do you think I would have better luck if I waited a while until my bichir got bigger, and then got a bullhead?

How big do 4 lines get? I thought they only get to like 7". Also, I don't know if I could get a 4 line pim because what my lfs has labled as 4 line pims have spots, not stripes,:screwy: so common sense tells me that's not actually what they are.:grinno:

I'll see if I can find a small one. If I can't, I guess I'll just have to have a catfish-less tank for a while. Thanks for the info.:D

4line pims are pimelodus blochii. no, they dont actually have 4 lines. dont ask why...
they get 10" and are fairly active... should do well with that pacu.

why exactly are you worried about a catfish outgrowing the tank when you have a pacu?

w/ that said i'd go with one of the larger synodontis species

DONT WANT TO PUT YOU ON A DOWNER BUT I WOULD HOLD OFF BUYING NEW FISH TILL YOU SORT WHAT YOU HAVE.
FIRST OFF LOSE THE PACU-THEY GET WAY TOO BIG AND TAKE CHUNKS OUT OF OTHER FISH.
AFTER THAT CONSIDER SOME GROW-ON TANKS SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE SURE YOUR FISH ARE IN THE SAME SIZE RANGE AS EACH OTHER, DONT KEEP FISH SMALLER THAN ABOUT 60PER CENT THE SIZE OF YOUR LARGEST PREDATOR IN THE SAME TANK.
AS FOR YOUR ORIGINAL POST -CHECK OUT PLANET CAT FISH THEY HAVE A "SAME OR SIMILAR SIZE " FINDER.:)

I got the pacu before I knew how big they got, which was not entirely my fault. I always do a ton of research on a fish before buying it (which I did with the pacu). I had read three or four books and like five websites that all said that Red Bellies get to 24". I only found one source that said that they get to 36"+ which I automatically dismissed as being a myth since I had looked at so many other sources that claimed they only got to 24" (and one actually said 18"). So it was only after I had gotten the fish that I started getting on this site more often and saw the threads about pacu growth rates and realized that my tank isn't actually big enough. The problem is, my house doesn't have nearly enough space for a larger tank, and you probably know how hard it is to get rid of a pacu. So I'm basically stuck with it. I figure it is better to have one fish that doesn't have enough space than two. So that is why I am worried about a catfish outgrowing my tank.
