does anyone know how to catch baby flathead catfish? and also is it true that if u put liver or cut up shad into a minnow trap then ill catch flatheads? any suggestiong welcome! i might buy sum also. i live in council bluffs, iowa tyvm!

I caught them a couple years ago on minnows fishing by a rock bluff this time of year. They are very territorial in tanks. I brought two home and the first week I had them the larger one ate the smaller one, swallowed him half way and killed him. I eventually released the larger one. I would assume you could catch them in a large minow trap but by now they are proably a few inches long if they were spawned in May. Good luck and take pics.

this should be moved to the fishing forum. but i used the fried pork from fried rice. im tellin you it works, ive caught a 4 inch flathead to a 23 pound blue cat on it. give it a try.
Flat heads are highy predatory and unlike other NA cats, they prefer live prey over dead prey. Try fishing with live minnows on the bottom at night. Its tough to catch small ones. They are not farm raised either because of how canaballistic they are.
have you considered the size of the animal? they get huge so i wouldnt recommend getting one unless you have a big enough tank ( huge as in 108 pounds in the WILD) and nobody will take him off your hands if he does get too big and the fact that they are highly cannibalistic, so euthanasia would be the only legal alternative. releasing back into wild is HIGHLY ILLEGAL. so please reconsider this before ending the life of such a cool fish.
