Anyone have any tips on catching banded killifish? I have been to 2 lakes they were supposed to be in, and haven't seen any, let alone caught any.

I almost always catch a few of them when I use my cast net to catch minnows.

Ok according to my book they prefer midsize streams, that aren't muddy and occur over sand and gravel at less than 8 inches deep, there r at least 2 species

Thanks for this info, I have a spot picked out which hopefully will be successful. Unfortunately I wont have time to try for about 1.5 weeks. It should fit most of that criteria, it is about a 1 mile long river that only drops 1 foot in elevation and connects two large lakes that have them on their species list, last time I was there is was quite weedy and is fairly shallow.

I catch thousands of them in summer for work on the Kennebec river. I have forgotten, but you are over in the western part of the state? They are found in the shallows, almost right on the shoreline, in lakes, ponds, and rivers. Usually near weed cover but I do see them out in the open. You could probably use a large, fine mesh dip net or even small seine.

Thanks spotfin I'm over in the Poland/Auburn area. My plan is to use a mesh dip net at this time. I'm headed over to Cresent Lake in Casco/Tenny River/Panther Pond for my next attempt. The Kennebec isn't all that far though, so if this fails I will certainly try there. We head up that way in January for smelting :-).

Not far at all. One set of smelt camps (Bakers) is just up the road from me.
Good luck! If you don't find any over your way, try around the boat ramps in Augusta or Gardiner. Give a shout if you head over this way.
Caught a couple hundred of them today:)
