Hey guys I`m revamping my 120g 4x2x2 and getting rid of my American cichlids, I find after keeping them for a long time that I just get bored of them. I hear that catfish have personality on par with cichlids, and are very intelligent. and the sad truth is I don`t think I have ever really given this class of fish too much thought and I am interested in starting.

I have a nice wide floor base and I was thinking of having a powerhead create a strong current. Could someone recommend some catfish that have personality and maybe a mixed bunch? also what would be appropriate tank mates? I find that some fish hog the pellets before the catfish even get a chance to eat them.

My first thought would be a group of pictus cats, theyre a nice medium size and very active at the bottom. I did consider synodontis too, possibly the smaller upside down variety to live around some wood and anubias.

anyway I`m open to suggestions!
Thanks guys

Those guys are like bigger Pictus right? I`ve never seen them for sale but a very nice suggestion. they look awesome

Ornate pims, sun cat, Asian usd, I'd say catfish that stay under 15" are good to go.

Same like pictus but gets to be around 10". I have 2 and they're not as active like the pictus cats. Something to keep in mind.

brachysynodontis batensoda. Also known as the giant upside down catfish, they get 6"

I have pictus with my cichlids and love them. They're great looking, funny, and stand up for themselves. Raphael catfish are great too. Love mine

Some very nice suggestions here guys, I'm receiving a lot of info haha. Are there any synos that mix well with Pictus? I know some like the featherfin can be *******s to other fish. I wouldn't mind some Raphael`s I have seen both spotted and striped varieties locally.

I had a lima shovelnose about 8 years ago that was a real cool fish, never seen one for sale since though.

What are some good non cichlid tankmates for catfish? I`m thinking something that wouldn`t steal all the food before it hits the bottom, unless pictus are going to swim up and grab the sinking pellets as they fall?
Also how many Pictus would make a good shoal in a 120?

I'd say a shoal of 6 if it's the smaller pictus catfish. My Pictus eat just fine with aggressive cichlid species and arent afraid to fight for a pellet if they're hungry. Mine adore shrimp pellets. And as for a top dweller, I loved my Halfbeak Gars. And maybe a schooling species for that tank. I'll try and grab some pics of my catfish then. And I prefer and have the Striped raphael, it hides all day but is still great for my nocturnal crew
