  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I`d love to see some pictures FastFisher, Its not that I thought cichlids wouldn`t work with them, its that I`ve just grown bored of new world cichlids, I used to have a hujeta gar and they were pretty interesting. Just out of interest what do you feed yours?

And as for the gar. I had Halfbeak not Hujeta. I didn't have them long, eaten by I believe my larger Bala Shark, but they ate flakes a lot and some blackworms. As for the Hujeta, I'm actually hoping to order one for my cichlid tank soon. Either that and or a pink tail chalceus (which you may also like). Hujeta get larger than Halfbeak. An out of the box idea, and one epic looking fish imo, I'd the Black Knife Fish. Also looking at one myself haha. Any questions about these fish or others, feel free to PM me, I'm always up for fishy talk lol

Yeah you will love the hujeta they are very awesome fish, nice and active and surprisingly peaceful for a predatory characin. I used to have the African knife fish, the solid black one. I kept him with some peaceful American cichlids. He grew to about 7" and came out mostly in the evening or night time, he actually ate flakes. Or do you mean black ghost knife?

I used to have a pink tail chalceus in my 225 but he got spooked and knocked himself out and drowned. I found him about halfway dead and held him with his mouth open infront of the water flow to try and resuscitate him but he just kept rolling over. pretty sad really, they are very nice fish. I have an Angulatus in my 75g planted as a show piece fish, might want to consider one of those if you like larger characins

Thanks for the info. And yeah I meant ghost knife. I'm toying around with putting a ghost knife and or hujeta in with my cichlids. They're gonna be big boys but I love these 2

Hujetas are quick and they fill up the top level of the tank nicely, they won`t really go to the mid and lower levels much though. Hujetas like to be in groups, but I had a singleton for well over a year as it was the only one I ever saw for sale.

Ive never kept a BGK I know they get huge though. I was thinking of having mormyrids with the pictus. you know like elephant nose or something

Yeah a BGK gets pretty big. Most do a 75 gallon minimum for them. So I could do it at least. And I definetly may try to order a Hujeta Gar now. And maybe a Belly Crawler Pike. My tanks are usually all rag tag teams that look nice in the end lol

Sounds like a good match up, I had a leftover $25 gift card from my birthday at a pet store and I had to buy a UVB light for my redfoot tortoise so their lack of pictus catfish lead me to buy this awesome little trio, one of them is realyl fat and eating well.

I'd get 2 dozen of Pimelodus pictus.

They are voracious feeders and will learn to compete for feed with almost any tank mate. If needed, they will come to the surface to get at the feed.

But really, there are too many nice catfish in the trade. A dozen of lima catfish would be nice too.

I just don't know what you are going to do with these when you get bored of them too? ;)

haha well I don`t really intend to get bored of them, I`ve kept central american cichlids for about 13 years and its time to expand my fishkeeping knowledge on an underapreciated group of fishes. I had a really nice Achara catfish about 15" in my 225 but I had to shut that down when I moved as it wouldn`t fit in my new house lol. someone got a really nice deal on a 3ft wide tank.

Yeah A group of limas would make a very nice addition but I`ve only ever seen one specimen for sale at a time, never a tank full and they are always at least 8". I would love to start with some juvies.
For now I have my nice synos and tomorrow I`ll be heading to a bigger store to look for some more medium sized cats, hopefully pick up some pictus or another kind of syno.

I wasn`t lying when I said I picked a really fat syno heres some proof
