catfish for a 10-15 gallon tank?

Balas grow like a foot long. I wouldn't recommend them for your 55. Try looking up all the fish you'd like to keep here: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/index.html
There's a Google search tool at the bottom of the page, and you can just enter the fish you want to know about, and a whole bunch of information will come up. Make note of the water chemistry (pH, KH), temperature, and maximum size. Try to pick fish that enjoy the same water hardness and pH and roughly the same temperature, and don't grow very large. Then, you can let us know what you're thinking about keeping and we can help you figure out if they'll get along or eat each other or what.
Right now, you're sort of all over the place, and so it's hard to come up with something that makes sense. On Dragon Gobies -- the LFS usually sticks them in freshwater, but they are brackish water fish. This could account for why they're always disgusting-looking in the LFS. They don't survive long in freshwater. Moral of the story -- don't listen to LFS and do your own reserach before you walk in the door.

The ten gallon's not going to do much for you, really.
I'd concentrate on stocking the 55, and then you can use the ten gallon as a grow-out, if necessary, or as a quarantine tank, or even as a hospital tank.
Ten gallon tanks just get most people into trouble, because they're easy to overstock. Stocking small tanks is actually a lot harder than stocking larger ones, and small tanks are also harder to keep clean.
